Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Kansas City Trombonist, Arranger & Composer Jason Goudeau – This Houston, Texas native attended the highly acclaimed High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and studied jazz under the direction of Dr. Robert Morgan – He has performed with many artists throughout the past two decades. He was awarded the first “George Salisbury Memorial Scholarship” given at UMKC in 1985 and earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from UMKC in 1989. From Brooklyn, she went to Chicago, then the New England Conservatory of Music - back to Chicago and then on to Baltimore and now she is a huge name in the world of jazz .. Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jazz Saxophone Virtuoso James Carter ..  He opened up about his latest 2019 CD - James Carter Organ Trio: Live From Newport Jazz  .. He’s now at 50 and making his debut as a bandleader for Blue Note Records .. Born in 1969 in Detroit, he began playing at age 11 and studied early on with trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. As a prodigy, he progressed quickly and by 1986 at age 17 joined Wynton Marsalis on tour. He had six recordings under his own name between 1993 and 2000 and has been lauded for his prowess of the jazz bandstand .. He opened up about quite a bit .. He originally got baptized in the Chicago scene, then 12 years in New York City and now Kansas City is home .. he’s currently on faculty at University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory and he couldn’t be happier to be in KC .. Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with UK Jazz Bassist Nick Blacka of the Modern Band GoGo Penguin .. They just released a new EP .. 2019’s Ocean in a Drop (Music for Film) .. The band came together in 2012 and they all had rich music backgrounds .. thus, GoGo Penguin began .. Their first labum – 2014’s v2.0 was the Mercury Prize album of the year .. In 2015 they were signed to Blue Note Records and today they are rocketing through the jazz stratosphere .. joining Nick is Chris Illingworth on piano and Rob Turner on the drums creating a unique sound that is acoustic-electronica drawing of  rock, jazz and minimalism, computer game soundtracks and glitchy-electronica to create vibe .. And in case you are wondering about the name .. this is how it came about – A few of the guys got drunk at the rag-week auction and Pete a weird looking stuffed penguin - his girlfriend was terrified of it and wouldn’t have it in the house, so Grant put it up in his house .. after they got their first gig at Sandbar in Manchester - they desperately needed a name, so they started throwing ideas about and the penguin telepathically gave them solution. - ‘Penguin’, ‘Go Penguin’ and eventually ‘Gogo Penguin’. He has long been considered one of the most gifted and prominent pianist/ arrangers on the contemporary Latin, Latin-jazz and salsa music scene and is best known as the leader of the world renowned “Spanish Harlem Orchestra”. Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Jamaican Jazz Piano Legend Monty Alexander .. We elaborated on his latest 2019 CD Wareika Hill – covering the classic Thelonis Monk album and refers to a place in Jamaica where Rastafarian musicians used to gather located behind Monty's childhood home outside of Kingston. He looked at that hill quite a bit growing up .. 2019 is also a banner year in honor of celebrating his 75th birthday and six professional decades in the music industry – and he also got an honorary Doctorate from the University of the West Indies and was the a recipient of the Commander of Distinction title from Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson. Over time, he has played with the likes of Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins and Clark Terry, but it was after his family moved to Miami, Florida, in 1961, where he played in various nightclubs and got attention of Frank Sinatra who flew him to New York .. Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Veteran San Francisco-based Jazz Guitarist Ray Obiedo .. He opened up about is great 2019 CD Carousel .. His 9th release as yet another collection of original compositions fused with Contemporary Jazz, Latin and Brasilian-styled rhythms. He grew up in the East Bay and very early on recognized his own profoundly soulful musical connection to the Northern California region and its blend of exotic multi-ethnic rhythms. He had numerous trips across the bay to places like the Fillmore Auditorium & Winterland Auditorium to hear and go backstage to hang with legends Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, to the great Isaac Hayes and Sly Stone. It was a world tour in 1978-79 with jazz superstar Herbie Hancock that is big in his early memory .. He talks about that and so much more .. so get to know him and dig this interview my friends ..
