"The Resurrection and the Life," in which Susan Glaspell explores the meaning of love, life, loss, and death, was originally published in "The Smart Set" (Sept. 1913). It is narrated here by Ann Boaden.

The versatile writer and journalist Floyd Dell (1887-1969) was a good friend of Susan Glaspell and George Cram Cook. He became acquainted with them in the Davenport, Iowa, area before moving to Chicago for a few years, where he wrote for the Friday Literary Review of the Chicago Evening Post, and afterwards heading out to the East coast -- a short time before they did too. All three were active with the Provincetown Players. Dell, who served as an editor for the "Masses" magazine and immersed himself in Greenwich Village life, recorded his observations in a series of pieces he ultimately collected in 1926 as "Love in Greenwich Village." The first of these, described as a "proem" to this collection, was originally published in "The Century Magazine" in October 1925.

The epigraph, "All of which I saw, and part of which I was," sometimes attributed to Julius Caesar (but actually derived from Vergil's "Aeneid," 2.5-6, it seems) has been popular with many a memoir-writer. Dell quotes some portions of his own poetry on Greenwich Village without comment. The poetic lines on the Coliseum are from Lord Byron's "Childe Harold," Canto IV. Dell also quotes from Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem "Recuerdo": "We were very tired, we were very merry ..." The passage he quotes from John Reed on Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was from reporting on the trial of IWW leaders, printed in "The Education of John Reed," p. 176. The woman he identifies by the pseudonym "Egeria" was in real life known as Henrietta Rodman; Egeria was the name of a nymph who, in the earliest years of ancient Rome, was supposed to have provided inspiration to King Numa.

It presents Claire Archer's uncompromising pursuit of new forms in the cultivation of plants, her seemingly impossible quest for self-fulfillment in the face of society's insistence on utility and conformity. It is a powerful expression of feminism and of the creative life, an exploration of the fine line between vision and madness, a meditation on spiritual fulfillment and tragic loss. This episode includes the entirety of Acts Two and Three of The Verge.
