Before David became King of Israel he was a shepherd boy, familiar with the role of being a shepherd and also the nature of sheep. In the 23rd Psalm he wrote - The Lord is my Shepherd. The prophet Jeremiah lived during the days of King Josiah, a godly king who sought to restore Judah to godliness by tearing down pagan shrines etc. in Judah. Sadly this did not last and the people resorted to sin, perhaps even greater. God gave the prophet Jeremiah a revelation of a greater king to come, one who would be the Lord Our Righteousness and bring about a righteousness and moral acceptance. Hundreds of years later that king came, His name was Jesus Christ and He brings about righteousness (moral acceptance, goodness) that is not of works nor can it be destroyed. It lasts forever. After delivering the Israelites from slavery and bondage in Egypt, the Lord brought them to Marah, a place of bitter waters. The Israelites complained bitterly and perhaps didn't understand why they were there, but the Lord wanted to first deal with something that would prevent and hinder them from going on.

We, who have been delivered from the enemy and are saved and serving the Lord sometimes too find ourselves at a place where God appoints for us. Joshua encountered the Lord in his battle for the city of Jericho, a stronghold of the enemy standing between where God's people were and where God destined them to be.

Joshua received precise battle instructions on how to defeat and remove the obstacle blocking him from God's blessing and favor. The instructions Joshua received thousands of years ago are instructive for us today in our battle against the obstacles keeping us from the blessings God wants to bestow on us. Joshua stood staring at the obstacle in his path, the city of Jericho with its 46 foot high walls, 6 feet thick. Jericho was positioned between him and the promised land to which God had called him and the people of Israel. Are you facing obstacles that keep you from the place God wants you to be? Are there obstacles between you and the peace, rest, blessing, favor and provision that God has for you? Then like Joshua, you need an encounter with the Lord of Hosts, who will war on your behalf and remove the obstacles that keep you from the place He has called you to.

Abraham faced another crisis in his life - this time to be obedient to God and sacrifice the object of his affection and the hope for his entire future. What should he do? Should he compromise and stay in a place of comfort? Or should he accept the challenge and find out that God is Jehovah Jireh, the Lord our provider, who once we are obedient to Him, is able to take what we give him and turn it into blessings.

Abram was old, Sarai was barren and old, yet Abram believed in God's promise of a child and nation that would come from him. Yet somewhere along the way they fell in to the trap of devising their own plans and schemes to bring forth what God had promised. Have you held on to the promises of God and even missed God along the way? Have you done things your own way instead of God's way? Then meet the Almighty God of the Bible who is well able to overcome every obstacle, every mistake of yours to keep His promises to you.

Returning from battle with many riches Abram has an encounter with the King of Sodom, an evil king. It is here that a greater king makes an appearance and causes Abram to say that he has lifted his hands to the one true God, the Creator and Possessor of heaven and earth. Today the enemy attempts to seduce the believer with lying promises. It is then that we need to catch a vision of an even greater King and lift our hands to Him, our Creator and Possessor of heaven and earth.

King Hezekiah wept bitterly when he was told that his life was coming to an end, but turned to the wall and cried out to God. Have you ever been so crushed and broken that you were moved to tears while in prayer to God? Rest assured God has not only heard your prayers, but he has seen your tears!

We bombard the throne of Grace to ask God to meet our needs, intervene in our life situations, provide guidance and so on. All well and good, but have you ever stopped to ask God what He has for you? Are you even aware that God has something set aside for you other than heaven for those who believe? The Bible says eye has not seen, ear has not heard nor has entered into our hearts the things that God has for those who love Him. If you are a believer in Christ, then how do you receive what He has for you?
