We begin a short series through the Parables in the Gospels. Our first stop will be with the Good Samaritan which is a fascinating interaction between a lawyer and Jesus over what a true neighbor actual is. The lawyer is wanting to know who is his neighbor, which means he wants to know who his neighbor isn’t. In other words, who don’t I have to help or be nice to. And so Jesus sets out on describing what a true neighbor is like. We will all be challenged by Jesus’ description of a neighbor.

Our entire faith rests on the single event of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. This year we will look at it from the theme that Jesus through His resurrection can make our lives better. The Resurrection of Jesus is the single most important event in all of human history because our eternity depends on it. But not only our eternity, but also our present. You see, Jesus rose from the dead and therefore He can takes parts of our life that are dead, stinky and broken and breathe new life into them.

As we continue our travels through the last week of Jesus life leading to the crucifixion, we make a stop at the Last Supper. During this time Jesus begins teaching His disciples some important last lessons. These lessons are the final pieces of their three year mentorship with Jesus. One of the most vital lessons they will learn is, “What is true greatness.” Jesus will give them a definition that is completely contrary to the culture AND one that He modeled on a daily basis.

On Wednesday the plot to kill Jesus began. Jesus knows that the time is near for Him to soon lay down His life, but what is His response? So by now the religious leaders have had enough of Jesus and want to discredit and destroy Him. So what do they do? They challenge Him with a question in front of the crowd on the Temple mount. Bad idea. Jesus turns the tables on them exposing them as the ones with no authority. He does this with a simple question; “The baptism of John, was it from heaven or from man?” And in this message we get to watch them squirm.

On Monday of the final week Jesus walks onto the Temple mount and does what no one expected: He tears the place apart. He overturns the tables where they do money exchange and casts out those buying and selling. But the question is, why does He do this? Well He has His reasons and in this message we will find out the why of the Temple cleansing.

Jesus comes riding into Jerusalem to fulfill His mission to save mankind from their sins. One problem, they people don’t think they need saving from their sins. They think they need saving from the sins of the Roman oppressors. This is a classic case of us wanting God to do what we want Him to do instead of doing what He is going to do. But as usual, God knows what is best and stays on course to save us from our sins and aren’t you glad.

I get asks from time to time for a recommendation of a good church in a certain city. People ask me this because either they have moved or they know someone in that city that is looking for a good healthy church. Now what they are really asking me is if the Pastor is a good Pastor. It’s a good legitimate question. You want a Good Shepherd. But that conjures up another question: What does Good Shepherd look like. What makes them good? I’m glad you asked that because in Acts 20 Paul, while defining his ministry life, gives us the character qualities of a Good Shepherd. And we are the beneficiaries of what he said.

We come to a moment in time where it seems people are trying to jump on the “Jesus Name” bandwagon. What I mean is, they attempt to verbally use the name of Jesus to cast out a demon. The problem is, they have no relationship with Jesus. Which means that they are not under the authority of Jesus, they have not surrendered their lives to Him for salvation. So when seven brothers attempt to use the name of Jesus to cast out a demon, the demon turns on them and strips and beats them and they take off running for their lives. We will look at this chapter in the early church to see what went wrong and how we can use the power of the Name of Jesus properly.

This is one of our biggest periodic struggles of our faith, “How do I know God is with me?” Because honestly, many times we feel or have muttered to ourselves, “Where are you God?” I can tell you that God is with us but we just don’t see the signs of His presence. In Acts 18 through the life of Paul we will see the tangible signs of God’s presence in our lives. After all the Word does say, “He will never leave or forsake us.”
