After drifting on the sea for fourteen days, the ship Paul was on finally landed off the shore of an island called Malta. The crew was delivered as God had promised. They were warmly welcomed by the locals. Paul survived a deadly snakebite due to God's miraculous intervention, causing the natives to mistaken Paul as a god. Paul healed the father of Publius, the chief of the island, and many others. We see that Paul's miraculous healings were a demonstration of his apostolic authority and an authentication of the Gospel message. However, Word and deed are not two wings on a plane - deeds are the overflow of the Gospel ministry. Missions is not an equal distribution of charity and Gospel proclamation. Rather, mission is primarily and ultimately about making disciples, and acts of service flow out from transformed lives.

Building on his previous lesson on Total Depravity, he surveys the scriptures to show that humans, spiritually dead in their sins, could not choose God, but God, as the prime mover in election, first chose and loved his elect. After Paul's introduction in his letter to Titus, his very first command - concern is having Titus raise up elders in the local churches on Crete. Paul begins in this passage by laying out character qualifications for elders, and then transitions to doctrinal qualifications afterwards. Here, Paul says that elders must be above reproach, with the most crucial testing ground for them being their private lives and families. Paul then grounds these elder qualifications in the fact that elders are stewards - slaves of God, responsible for managing the house of God. Even though the character qualifications for elders are first found in Jesus and consequently ought to be found in the Chief Shepherd's under-shepherds, all church members are slaves of Jesus and should embody these attributes as well.

After healing the invalid man, Jesus was persecuted by the Jews for breaking their laws and for claiming to be equal with God. In response, our Lord declared His authority over life and death, His special relationship with God, His equality with God, and offered eternal life to those who would believe.

Paul, accompanied by Luke and Aristarchus, traveled from Caesarea to New Havens on a grain ship with other prisoners and the centurion Julius. At New Havens, despite Paul's warning of imminent danger, they set out to Phoenix. Paul risked his life for the Great Commission. Applications of how to be a Great Commission Christian in every stage of life, from childhood, adolescence, adult years, retirement, to death, are examined.

We see the doctrines of election and particular redemption in Jesus' High Priestly Prayer when our Lord stated that God the Father has given the Son a people. Salvation is by God's sovereign decree because man is unable to bring himself to Christ. At the same time, the sinner is commanded to believe. The realization of his helplessness should drive the sinner to cast himself on Christ. Subsequently, those who are saved strive to keep God's Word because they have a new heart.
