Overview: Peter begins his Christian living section with a threefold command to the most powerless in society to be subject to authority -- first Christians to government, then slaves to masters, and now wives to husbands. Peter commands wives to be submissive to their husbands, mainly out of an evangelistic motivation since such submission displays glorious truths of gospel hope. However, this submission doesn-t mean agreeing to - obeying all that the husband says, nor does it mean the wife should humbly influence the husband. Peter says that the way wives heed this commandment is with a quiet and gentle spirit adorning their hearts, which is attained by hoping in the promises of God found in Scripture. The life of Sarah, Abraham-s wife, is an example of Peter-s exhortations. Lastly, Peter commands husbands to honor the wife and not take advantage of their submissiveness or their weakness. However, the foundation for these commands - found in the word -likewise- - is the example that Christ gives. Wives are called to submit to husbands just as Christ submitted to the will of the Father -the incarnation and crucifixion-, and husbands are called to honor the wife as the weaker vessel as Christ honors and serves his weaker bride, the Church.
