Overview: Peter has just described the relationships that exist between individual Christians and God, as well as between believers themselves. In this passage, he moves on to describe the corporate relationship of Christians - the local church to God. He starts by alluding to the suffering of Jesus Christ and the worth of his work on the cross, which is the cornerstone of the entire book. Peter then makes an analogy between the local church and the Old Testament temple, explaining how the local church is the spiritual house of God. This is where Christians learn what life is like with the Father and are able to offer lives of obedience by faith as sacrifices to God, which He wholeheartedly accepts and rejoices over because Christ takes away the sins from the sacrifices - presents them to the Father himself. But while this honor is for the Christians, Peter shows that those who reject Christ are rejecting God Himself to their own peril. Overview: While this passage starts out by giving a travel log of Paul and Barnabas on their missionary endeavors, the main point is that the entire first missionary journey that is now concluding is summarized as -commended to the grace of God-. A journey that included sailing through storms, being hated by angry mobs, and Paul being stoned to the point that his enemies thought he was dead - the apostles call this journey a gift of grace. They teach Christians here to see God-s grace in trials, knowing that God takes evil circumstances and gives the Christian something far better- namely, a deeper sense of Christ. Suffering helps to deflate our ego and increase our sense of the perfection of God, so we too can see the hand of God and rejoice at the work He has done and is doing in His Church.

Overview: The passage begins by displaying the humility of Daniel as he gives all credit and glory to God for the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar-s dream, as opposed to exalting himself as a wise man. Seeing that God will only use the humble to be a channel of blessing to the world, we ought to look to Christ and be humbly moved by his humility for our sake. The content and interpretation of the dream shows the inferior and declining nature of the kingdoms of men, as well as the eternal, invincible, and secure nature of the Kingdom of God. In light of the contrasts between the kingdoms of men and the Kingdom of God that Nebuchadnezzar-s dream exposes, Christians are called to live as citizens of heaven, looking to Jesus Christ and the cross - as well as the coming of the new heavens and new earth. And while the coming of God-s kingdom is the worst news imaginable for the unbeliever, Nebuchadnezzar responds to the news by giving glory to the God of Israel, even as unbelievers might come to worship the One True God when hearing about the judgment and wrath to come.

Overview: After Peter exhorts his readers towards holy conduct in the previous verses, he fleshes out what such a life looks like among the exiled Christians - namely, loving one another in the church with a sincere and earnest brotherly love. Peter grounds this command to love one another in the fact that they have obeyed the truth - or in other words, believed the gospel - and been born again. Peter goes on to make several connections as to why the new birth should cause Christians to love one another, including- -1- the assurance that love will happen since the immortal and effective Word of God is the seed of your new birth- -2- the hope that enables us to love since the promises of God endure forever- -3- Christians have been shown immense love through Christ and are part of the same family of God. Peter concludes the passage by portraying what it means practically to love one another, encouraging his readers to drink deeply from the fountain of Jesus Christ, and letting the realities of Christ-s work in salvation move the Christian to find malice towards the brethren as disgusting and distasteful.

Overview: Paul and Barnabas go to the town of Lystra, where Paul preaches and heals a man who has faith to be saved. Crowds respond by worshiping Paul and Barnabas as gods -Zeus and Hermes-, but they try to stop the crowds by showing them that the Creator God is the only One worthy of worship - not creatures - creation. But in a rapid change of events, unbelieving Jews come and convince the crowd to immediately stop worshiping Paul and instead kill him. Yet just when Paul is thought to be dead, he rises and continues preaching, making disciples, and strengthening the church. We see in this passage that suffering is necessary for the Christian because of God-s great love for the Christian, shown in Christ. God gives suffering to make us holy, even as He gives Himself, His Son, and the Church for the sake of His people.

Overview: After Paul preaches at the synagogue of Antioch in Pisidia, the Jews jealously reject both the message and messengers of the gospel. The Gentiles, however, joyfully embrace salvation by repentance towards God and faith in Jesus Christ. But perhaps the most striking aspect of the passage is that the sovereign God accomplishes all that He pleases - specifically the salvation of His elect - unaffected by the folly, rage, and rebellion of humanity. God appoints many to eternal life on the basis of an unconditional election and through an effectual calling, which are great encouragements to preach the gospel and pray for evangelism and mission work.
