The team preached to this handful of women and Lydia was converted, along with her family shortly afterwards. Though this was certainly a day of small beginnings, this event marks the beginning of the church at Philippi, which would retain the generosity of Lydia seen in this passage.

Overview: As Peter continues giving instructions on Christian living, he turns from the political sphere of life to begin talking about submission in the household, starting with slaves. Although we aren-t literal slaves like in the text, we can find a parallel to this text in many instances of unjust suffering today. Peter calls his readers - already suffering quite a bit - to submit to unjust masters because it is an act of grace -towards the masters- that God will reward one day. The reason why Christians can heed this call is both because- -1- the work of Christ on the cross and in the tomb empowers Christians to deny fleshly desires to live like this life is ours- -2- the example of Christ gives us a picture that we should look at and follow by this newfound cross-strength.

Overview: As Peter begins writing about Christian living in different spheres of life, he begins by focusing on the relationship between Christians and civil authorities - human institutions. He commands the Christian exiles to submit to positions of power over them, as long as it does not conflict with commands of God. Peter says this exhortation so that Christian law-abiding behavior - well-doing will receive the praise of those in authority, and consequently silence evil slander against Christians. Such a result removes obstacles towards opportunities and audiences for gospel witness. The Christians are able to obey Peter-s teaching because they have been freed from being slaves to the world through the cross, and they show their status as slaves of God by cheerfully submitting to man - something slaves of the world do not do. Lastly, Peter concludes by telling his hearers to honor the wicked Roman emperor - a message Christians need to hear in our day as the spirit of this age is to mock our elected officials on both sides of the aisle.

Overview: After dreaming that his kingdom will come to an end in the previous chapter, King Nebuchadnezzar builds a giant image of gold in defiance of God-s words through Daniel, and commands the leaders of Babylon to worship it. However, when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse to bow down to the idol, Nebuchadnezzar becomes enraged that they won-t exalt him and his kingdom. They respond by saying that they are confident their God - the God of Israel - will deliver them from the fiery furnace, but even if He doesn-t that Nebuchadnezzar should not assume it-s because He is weaker than Babylonian false -gods-. Once they are thrown in the furnace, the presence of God delivers them not from but within the fiery affliction, and they escape unharmed - causing Nebuchadnezzar to acknowledge the power of this God and forbid any words contrary to it. Christians see in this passage that they shouldn-t love their lives here enough so as to compromise eternity, their faith will make them criminals in the eyes of many, and they ought to look to Jesus Christ-s abandonment on the cross - their resulting deliverance from hell unto glory to come in order to keep adhering to a faith that brings a thousand cuts daily.
