Sabbath Guidelines:

1. God allows for generous broad definitions of work, rest, mercy, necessity and piety to set apart the Sabbath.

2. Let us be careful to avoid the legalistic approach to the Sabbath.

3. Jesus' healings on Sabbath taught the acceptability of activities which refresh, heal, restore, and strengthen the body and spirit.

4. Let us prefer to be with Jesus, condemned and criticized, rather than with those doing the criticizing and condemning.

5. We must think the best of those who do things differently than us on the Sabbath.

6. There is no advantage to heartless Sabbath rule keeping.

7. The Sabbath day was not designed to hold us captive but rather to allow God to so captivate our hearts that we want time off from our work to spend with him in a special delightful way. The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.

1. Don’t use the obscure to interpret the plain.

2. Remember the first audience had a Sunday Sabbath.

3. The fourth commandment was never defined as ceremonial.

4. Paul’s writings must maintain consistency.

CONCLUDING APPLICATIONS:

1. Sabbath keeping is not disregarded as ceremonial.

2. Neither the Sabbath nor any other day will make you holy.

3. Heb. 10:24-25 rebukes the wrong interpretation of Colossians 2:16.

4. We need to keep Christ’s Sabbath command.

7 Reasons for Observing the Sabbath on Sunday

1. Sunday is the day Jesus chose to meet with his church (Matt.28:1-9; Mark16:2,9; Luke24:1,13-31; John20:1, 11-18, 19, 26).

2. Sunday is the day the apostles of Christ held church (John20:19-26; Acts 20:7).

3. Sunday is the day offerings were collected (1Cor.16:1,2).

4. Sunday is the day for rejoicing in Christ’s resurrection (Psa.118:22-24; Acts 4:8-12).

5. Sunday is the day Christ rejoiced in his new heavens and earth (Isa.65:17,18, 20, 21; 66:1-2, 18-20a, 22-24).

6. Sunday is the day to commemorate final redemption in Christ (Deut.5:15).

7. Sunday Sabbath observance is consistent with fourth commandment language (Exod.20:8-11; 16:23-26; Neh.9:14).

Application:

1. Rejoice that God has continued a Sabbath rest for each of us.

2. Recognize the rationality of the switch to a Sunday Sabbath and be unashamed to join Christ and his church on that day.
