There is a battle that takes place in the church when the "rules/religion" are more important than The Gospel. The Gospel of Jesus Christ frees us from the slavery of the rules of legalism. Legalism sounds good, even religious, but it readily and easily becomes self-centered. The Gospel isn't playing games with who is better, it is centered on Christ.

One of the most radical verses in scripture and in history is Galatians 3:28. We are one. There are no divisions in Christ and we are, by faith, children of God. There is no racial or social divide any longer. We don't look down on the poor and we don't resent the rich. We aren't better than others, or worse than others, in the church. We have been adopted as God's children.

Paul gives us God's promise made long before "the law". The law is (and was) important, but it was only to lead us to Christ. We are free from slavery to the law and sin. We are freed by faith in Jesus and saved by faith.

It's easy to forget. Some of the Galatians had. They were going back to legalism after discovering the freedom of God's grace. The "law" can't save us. It is only through faith in Christ. He removes our curse and we are redeemed by the truth of Jesus and the Gospel.

Unity in the church is essential. Division in any church is a cancer that must be addressed. Unity isn't about traditions or cultural differences - that only leads down a path of legalism. Our unity focus is to be on Christ, who offers us freedom and community, both of which are important.

God's grace is incredible. His grace is tied directly to The Truth. In Jesus: in the life, the death, the resurrection, everything we need to make right with God, He has already given to us.
