New Hope Tampa Bay Sunday Sermon Podcast

This Sunday, February 3, we will continue our 7-week sermon series, "A Firm Foundation." This weeks message is "Faithfully Engaging The Scriptures," and a key text will be 2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work." Faithfully engaging Scripture is one our greatest privileges as Christ followers, so we need to take it very seriously. How do we understand the authority of God's Word in our lives? Does God still speak to us? Absolutely, but God won't speak to us in a way that contradicts what He has already told us in His Word. When we love Jesus, we get to love His Word, too, as the authority of both faith and practice. Watch the Video and more here: http://findnewhope.com/resources/sermons/

This Sunday, January 27, we continue our sermon series based on the book, A Firm Foundation. Over the seven-week series, we will take a look at some of the foundational principles of our faith as we wrestle with schism and conflict in our denomination. This week's topic is "When Jesus is Lord..." Jesus is Lord is a counter-cultural statement. It means everything belongs to Jesus - our individual lives, the church, nation-states, and the entire cosmos. Nothing is outside his dominion. For individual Christ-followers, Jesus as Lord means submitting our whole life to him - our time, our money, our relationships, our decisions - everything! So often, we feel very comfortable saying yes to Jesus as Savior but struggle with committing to Jesus as Lord. We can only have one highest priority. How might someone else be able to tell that Jesus is Lord in your own life? But Jesus is also Lord over the church. How does this truth affect how we do life as a community of believers at New Hope? This Sunday, January 20, we will begin a new 7-week sermon series, **"A Firm Foundation,"** and I want to invite you to pick up the companion book on the porch for only $5. It's a great, quick read that delves deeper into the dilemma we face in the United Methodist Church. In 5 weeks there will be a called General Conference (the only body that speaks officially for the UMC) and big changes related to our standards and practices on human sexuality will be debated and decided. While this is the presenting issue, the controversy goes much deeper; for instance, to the way we understand the authority of Scripture and the Lordship of Jesus Christ. This weeks message is *"Commitment to Transformation,"* and a key text will be 2 Timothy 4:1-5: "I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom: Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths. But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you." This Sunday, January 6, we will focus on the meaning of Holy Communion as "A Family Meal" where all are invited. The Lord's Supper is one of the two sacraments in the United Methodist Church along with baptism, which we'll look at next week. Jesus was pretty clear: "Do this in remembrance of me." Communion matters a lot. We'll look at why. [Read 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 to be best prepared](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+11%3A17-34&version=NLT). This Sunday, December 30th, we will get ready to welcome in a new year. Every year we make promises, resolutions and changes within our self to embrace the coming year. Why? Because we want to better ourselves and steer ourselves on track with a good and healthy life. Why do we wait for January 1st? Why not start every day with new life? The biggest hang ups that we have are anxiety and stress, the false perception that we need to be perfect in a not so perfect world, and that if we don’t have control we will not meet a life worthwhile. However, what if we gave it all to God? What if we looked at each day with the enthusiasm that we look at in our new year, but with the acceptance that this is God’s design not ours? What if instead of just trying to find happiness, we found joy? We will look at examples in Philippians 4:6-7, Genesis 12:1-3, and end in what really is at stake in our short but complicated lives, gratitude, Psalms 103:1-5. This Sunday, December 23rd, we will continue to celebrate the season of Advent, which prepares us for the coming of Jesus Christ. We tend to simplify and sanitize the Nativity scene when it was actually quite dangerous and scandalous! This week's message, *"Mary Matters"*, will be based on Luke 1:26-38, 46-55. Mary was a complex, very real young girl who took significant risk to carry out the mission God had for her. We have much to learn from her experience as we prepare our hearts for Christmas. What might God be calling you to do this season? How does Mary's example of worship inspire us to experience Emmanuel, God with us, this Advent? This Sunday, December 9, we continue to celebrate the season of Advent, which prepares us for the first coming of Jesus Christ as a vulnerable baby not to hide the nature of the Father, but to reveal Him in love. As we look forward to celebrating the first coming of Jesus Christ, we look to the hope of the second coming of Jesus Christ. In “The Final Countdown” we will see that God isn’t slow about His return; rather God is patient with those who haven’t yet said “Yes!” to following Jesus and patient with us to reach out to them. Who needs an invite from you- to new life in Christ or just to join you in worship?

To be better prepared read 2 Peter 3:8–15a.

This Sunday, December 2, we will celebrate a **"Happy New Year!"** *Advent* marks the beginning of a new year on the Christian calendar where we are invited to prepare for the first coming of Jesus Christ- fully human and fully God- as a vulnerable baby not to hide the nature of the Father, but to reveal Him in love. In the second coming Jesus Christ will return in power and final victory, which inspires us to celebrate our faith and grow our faith. We will look at one of Paul's earliest letters to a young congregation in Thessalonika. [1 Thessalonians 3:9-13](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Thessalonians+3%3A9-13&version=NLT) says, "How we thank God for you! Because of you we have great joy as we enter God’s presence. Night and day we pray earnestly for you, asking God to let us see you again to fill the gaps in your faith. May God our Father and our Lord Jesus bring us to you very soon. And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows. May he, as a result, make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people. Amen." Watch the Video and more here:

This Sunday, November 25, we will celebrate Christ the King Sunday featuring a message based on Revelation 1:1–8, “The Coming Attraction.” In the midst of life’s struggles, pains, and difficulties we put our trust in the ultimate victory of Jesus Christ, who is not only our Savior but the Lord of all. We always can be grateful for the full and final victory on the way in Christ.
