  • God's Will? - 5/22/2016

God knows what our future holds but does that mean he controls everything in our future? This Sunday we're going to explore what we mean by "God's will" and how our own "free will" plays into it. Many of you come to New Hope UMC from differing faith backgrounds...that means a Wesleyan perspective on this subject may not be everything you thought AND a whole lot more.

  • Altaring Our Need to Be Offended - 4/24/2016
    Sunday April 24, 2016

This Sunday we continue with our sermon series, "Altar

Ego: Becoming Who God Says You Are." This week we'll talk
about "Altaring Our Right to Be Offended." It
seems we are more and more allowing ourselves to believe in our
right to be offended, but Scripture doesn't confirm this as a value
for the followers of Jesus Christ. Even when we do have legitimate
reasons to hold onto our feelings of offend and resentment, God's
Word still invites us to higher values.

    • Proverbs 19:11: "Sensible people
    • control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking
      wrongs."
    • Ephesians 4:32: "Instead, be kind
    • to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God
      through Christ has forgiven you."
    • Matthew 6:14-15: “If you forgive
    • those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive
      your sins."

Pray for all of us to be willing to carefully reflect on the the

ways God might be calling us to altar our right to be offended to
be more conformed to the image of Christ.

      Additional Scripture: Proverbs 19:11;

      Ephesians 4:32; Matthew 6:14-15

Live It Out: How can we altar our right to be easily
      offended?
      1. Give others the benefit of the doubt.
      2. Make a choice not to label people, but instead see them as the
      3. masterpiece G created them to be.
      4. Forgive others quickly. Will this often times be hard?
      5. Absolutely! Do it anyway. We do ourselves a favor by not having to
carry the burden of resentment around.
      6. Let the inexhaustible Word of God continue to speak the words
      7. we need to hear when we are tempted to be easily offended.

      8. Altaring Our Need for Control - 4/17/2016

This Sunday we continue with our sermon series, "Altar Ego: Becoming Who God Says You Are." This week we'll talk about "Altaring Our Need for Control." The fact is all of us have some things that we want to be in complete control of, but this is an illusion that can affect us in all kinds of negative ways.

Abram and Sarai got themselves into a lot of trouble by failing to trust God's promise to them and control their circumstance in Genesis 16:1-4: "Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not been able to bear children for him. But she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “The Lord has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have children through her.” And Abram agreed with Sarai’s proposal. So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian servant and gave her to Abram as a wife. (This happened ten years after Abram had settled Pin the land of Canaan.) So Abram had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. But when Hagar knew she was pregnant, she began to treat her mistress, Sarai, with contempt." Pray for us to be open to hearing God speak into our lives as we lay ourselves on the altar for Him to transform more fully into the image of Christ.

Additional Scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6, Luke 10:38-42, Philippians 4:6-7. The video version of this sermon is also available at http://www.brandonchurch.com/sermons/altaring-need-control-4172016

        • I Am the Resurrection and the Life

          March 27, 2016

This Sunday we finish up our Lenten series, "I Am Jesus." The Gospel of John relates seven unique statements Jesus makes about Himself to help us understand Who He is, and what He wants for us & from us. This week we'll take a look at a seventh "I Am" statement: "I Am the Resurrection and the Life" found in John 11:25-26: "Jesus told her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?'” Pray we are filled with joy at the opportunity to gather as God's people to sing praises and shout about the victory of our God over sin, suffering, and death itself. Pray for people checking out Jesus' church for the first time to be received well and to be open to the Good News of God's love for them in Jesus Christ.

          Additional Scripture: John 11:33-35, Isaiah 53:3, 1 Thessalonians  4:13, John 12:9-11.

          Sunday, March 20, 2016
We continue our Lenten series, "I Am Jesus." The Gospel of John relates seven unique statements Jesus makes about Himself to help us understand Who He is, and what He wants for us & from us. This week we'll take a look at Jesus' sixth "I Am" statement: "I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life" found in John 14:1-6. Pray we'll be open to truth of this profound and audacious statement of Jesus and that we will know the Father has a place for us – here and now, and for all eternity. Lord, help me get out the way, so You can be the Way, the Truth, and the Life in the lives of Your people. Additional Scripture: John 12:12-13.
