A real concern in the early church was the idea of  the wealthy - the well dressed, with gold and fine clothes - being treated differently than those who were less well off. It's the idea that those who look good on the outside must look good on the inside - and those who look bad on the outside must look bad on the inside. James speaks strongly against this notion.
