  • Doctrine
The Sadducees didnt believe in the resurrection. The Pharisees did. When Jesus corrected the doctrine of the Sadducees the Pharisees commended him. But Jesus rebuked the Pharisees that even though they had gotten some things right they had gotten many things wrong. In fact, their biggest mistake was that they had missed the truth about the Son of David, the Messiah, that was right before them. We have a similar tendency like the Pharisees to become proud and self-righteous about the doctrines we get right. So much so that we think that we have all our doctrines right. Instead, we have to be willing to listen, to be corrected, to seek truth according to the scriptures, and to apply that truth consistently in our lives.Watch at: https://youtu.be/E2kp_h4Xy90 File Downloads: https://dq5pwpg1q8ru0.cloudfront.net/2020/11/01/14/42/16/046d4407-cad9-4956-a31b-a12a892047c1/Week%2040%20-%20083020%20-%20Luke%2020%2027-47%20(Questions).pdf

  • Paying Taxes
In their ongoing attempts to get rid of Jesus the leaders tried to trap Jesus by asking him whether it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus saw through their duplicity and said to them, Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it? Caesars, they replied. He said to them, Then give back to Caesar what is Caesars, and to God what is Gods. (Luke 20:23-25) Jesus response leads us to consider, What is Caesars? and What is Gods? The answers to those two questions will affect how we live, how we pay taxes, and how we give.Watch at: https://youtu.be/R-NdOYcQGTg File Downloads: https://dq5pwpg1q8ru0.cloudfront.net/2020/10/30/07/35/44/225604a8-8d2b-4f10-9ccb-3571f893d2c0/Week%2039%20-%20082320%20-%20Luke%2020%2020-26%2021%201-4%20(Questions).pdf

  • Broken Not Crushed
Luke 20 opens with the teachers of the law and the leaders questioning Jesus about his authority. It wasnt because they were interested in following Jesus. They were trying to get rid of him because he was a threat to their own authority. Jesus spoke a parable that made it very clear to the leaders that Jesus knew their hearts. He knew that they had rejected him. But Jesus quoted Psalm 118:22 to say that the stone that they had rejected had become the chief cornerstone. Jesus then went on to say, Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed. We need to understand and act on the difference between being broken or being crushed by the same stone. • Kingdom Investments
Jesus shared the parable of the master and the ten servants specifically because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. Jesus draws a parallel between the master who was appointed as king a reference to Herod Archelaus and the judgment when the king returns. More importantly, he tells the people that to be proven to be trustworthy servants they had to put the masters resources to work until he returned. Jesus was telling the people then and all of us now that our focus should not be on when and how the master will return but rather on maximizing the return on kingdom investments. • Zacchaeus
Zacchaeus initial interest in Jesus, as described in Luke 19, seems to have been limited to a general curiosity to see what Jesus looked like. Little did Zacchaeus know that when he climbed up in a tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus his life would be radically and permanently transformed. Zacchaeus encounter with Jesus saves him, reinstates him, and empowers him to set things right with those he had wronged. This life transforming work of Jesus, who came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10), continues today in the lives of everyone who will invite him into their lives.Watch at: https://youtu.be/DH34hwXBJGI File Downloads: https://newlifeconcord.com/https://dq5pwpg1q8ru0.cloudfront.net/2020/10/30/02/19/33/7022c1d8-db4e-4c1f-81b5-94d1c2ff8ab5/Week%2036%20-%20080220%20-%20Luke%2019%201-10%20(Questions).pdf

  • A Good Life
The rich young ruler came to Jesus, the good teacher to ask how he could inherit eternal life. He was, by all external measures, a moral and upright man. His quest seemed noble and godly. But his interaction with Jesus revealed his true nature. He was looking to add to his wealth and his righteousness, his good life in the world, the confirmation of a good life in eternity. He wasnt looking for the true source of goodness, for which he would be willing to give up everything else. He was looking to validate his self-righteousness. When Jesus asked him to sell all that he had, give it to the poor, and to follow him the rich young ruler became very sad, because he was very wealthy.Watch at: https://youtu.be/Ui5J-lVr1Sg File Downloads: https://newlifeconcord.com/https://dq5pwpg1q8ru0.cloudfront.net/2020/11/02/17/45/15/2ab0c4a1-db6e-433f-ab96-1af0daaa383f/Week%2035%20-%20072620%20-%20Luke%2018%2018-43%20(Questions).pdf

  • Persistent Prayer
In Luke 18:1-17 Jesus continues to focus on the kingdom of God by emphasizing prayer. More specifically, Jesus teaches us that persisting in prayer, praying without any self-righteousness, and praying or talking to God as a little child are vitally important to enter into and then live in the kingdom of God. Persisting in prayer is to pray for true justice, to pray with faith, to pray with humility, to approach God boldly because of his imparted righteousness, and to petition our heavenly father just as a little child would petition their earthly father. Persisting in prayer is to pray without ceasing until we receive Gods response.Watch at: https://youtu.be/4HwtiGygv-w File Downloads: https://newlifeconcord.com/https://dq5pwpg1q8ru0.cloudfront.net/2020/11/02/17/45/33/af816d30-4b47-4b32-b597-29b00f8582c8/Week%2034%20-%20071920%20-%20Luke%2018%201-17%20(Questions).pdf

  • Kingdom Timing: Part 1
When Jesus responded to the Pharisees question about the timing of the coming of the kingdom of God he said, the kingdom of God is in your midst. Why were they asking him when the kingdom of God would come if it was already in their midst? The Pharisees had determined for themselves what the kingdom of God would be like and how it would come. Rome would be overturned, Israel would be restored, there would be signs and wonders accompanying the appearance of the Messiah, and the kingdom of God would be established on earth. Jesus and his ministry certainly didnt fit their understanding or expectations. And, so they missed the coming of the kingdom of God they were inquiring about. The lesson for us is that in our very human desire to know everything, to be certain of every detail vs. trusting the Lord to work all things together in his timing for our good, we can become so fixated on the signs we observe, our interpretations of scripture, and our expectations for the future that we miss the presence and power of God at work in our midst in the present.Watch at: https://youtu.be/ilGEIfWefaY File Downloads: https://newlifeconcord.com/https://dq5pwpg1q8ru0.cloudfront.net/2020/11/13/00/54/58/7de81f01-fed6-477c-b677-c521e7693531/Week%2033%20-%20071220%20-%20Luke%2017%2020-37%20(Questions).pdf

  • Stumbling
In Luke 17:1 Jesus told his disciples that things that cause people to stumble, or offenses, are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. This verse in the ESV translation states that temptations to sin are sure to come. These stumbling blocks, these offenses, are an entrapment of Satan to cause us to sin. So, what is the remedy? In Luke 17:3-4, Jesus speaks of the need to forgive our brothers and sisters no matter how many times they may have offended us. Forgiveness is the means by which we can keep from stumbling. • The Rich Man & Lazarus
In the story of the rich man and Lazarus Jesus focuses on the rich mans behavior on earth and subsequent experience in hell. The rich man not only ignored the poor and downtrodden, particularly Lazarus who lay at his gate, but flaunted his wealth and privilege. The only description of Lazarus is that he lived a miserable life on earth and enjoyed the comfort of God in heaven. The details of the story reinforce the point made in Hebrews 9:27, that people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment. It is not our desire for heaven, our fear of hell, reward for our good deeds, or compensation for our suffering that ushers us into eternity with God. Rather, it is how we respond to Moses and the prophets, the Word of God that has been given, to receive Gods grace. When we receive the grace of God we will share that grace with the least of these (Matthew 25:31-46).Watch at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWgkgIvOLzY File Downloads: https://newlifeconcord.com/https://dq5pwpg1q8ru0.cloudfront.net/2020/11/12/22/05/17/dd10945e-c952-495c-8bc0-681c27f811b9/Week%2030%20-%20062120%20-%20Luke%2016%2019-31.pdf
