Antichrist (2009)
Jules' finally is a tough one- the movie that people walked out on at Sundance.
Lar Von Trier is a challenging figure, he is notoriously hard on female actors and portrays women harshly in a number of his films.
Charlotte Gainsborough plays a woman who seems to be falling apart because of the death of her son, but may have had some darkness stewing before that.
Willem Dafoe plays a manipulative psychologist husband who is trying to fix his wife, arguably so she conforms to his idea of grief.
You can purchase Antichrist on iTunes and Amazon, or stream it on Netflix.

Hot Fuzz (2007)
John took this topic as an opportunity to finally watch the Edgar Wright picture Hot Fuzz.
Following in the success of Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz continued the love note to genre that Edgar Wright's Coronetto trilogy embodies.
John had seen the first and third movie in the loose trilogy, but it wasn't until just before this show that he saw the middle picture.
You can purchase Hot Fuzz on iTunes or Amazon. You can also stream it on Netflix.

This play by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh is John's pick for a tearjerker this week.
He saw it with Mary when it was playing on Broadway.
The original London cast included David Tennant as the author.
In the American New York production Billy Crudup played the author.
You can find the play online, sometimes copies come up on Amazon. You can watch some production people have uploaded to YouTube. If you're lucky enough to have a production run near you we would recommend it!

Yes, Please (2014)
Mary's pick this week for a tearjerker is the 'Sorry Sorry Sorry" chapter of Amy Poehler's auto-biography Yes Please.
There a number of biographies of comedic actors to check out, the chapter that Mary highlights is brutally honest and clearly in Amy's voice.
The skit in question isn't too hard to find with a search of the internet.
The woman who Amy un-wittingly lampooned spoke at the 2016 DNC.
You can purchase Yes Please on Amazon.
NEXT WEEK: We continue our topic of Tearjerkers w/ John's pick, a play "The Pillowman."

White Light / Black Rain (2007)
Kicking off our new Topic is Jules with 'White Light / Black Rain,' a documentary about the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima at the tail end of World War Two.
The controversy as to whether we should have used the weapons is secondary to the suffering of the people who were effected.
Commonly is it the perspective from the sky that we tend to focus on in terms of the nuclear bomb.
It is the artwork and recounting of eyewitnesses that lets this documentary show you the effects of the bomb from the ground.
You can purchase White Light/Black Rain on Amazon and iTunes.

Oliver! (1968)
The musical based on the stage play based on the novel by Charles Dickens is Keith's pick this week. The movie garnered multiple Oscars for its cast and crew. Mark Lester played the titular Oliver. The young Lester had a very specific look and it was put on his cast mates and director to get the performance from the fledgling actor. You can purchase Oliver on Amazon and iTunes. The soundtrack is available on Amazon.

Jesus Christ Superstar (1970)
The sung through rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice is Jules' pick for musicals this week (and Kristen taught us the term 'sung through').
The musical draws parallels to the cultural revolution of the 60′s and the rise of the Christ cult, and the violence that ended those movements.
There are also notions of inevitability and questions of freewill. Specifically that Judas' betrayal and Jesus' fate were preordained and the will of God, and no matter how hard they worked against that fate the outcome would be the same.
The songs run the gamut of emotional, sappy, silly, and dramatic.
Behind the scenes, Judas, Jesus and Mary Magdalene on the left.
You can purchase or stream Jesus Christ Superstar on Amazon and iTunes. The soundtrack is available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.
NEXT WEEK: One last pick with Keith's pick, the Dickens musical Oliver.
