___________

pt2: Serial Experiments Lain (Anime 1998)

Teylor presents her pick on our topic this week with the animated 13 episode series Serial Experiments Lain. This series is a standout for the writer and producers.

Yoshitoshi ABe lent his talents as the character designer. He has designed for a number of series. Two great ones, as mentioned by Teylor; NieA 7 & Haibane Renmei.

Lain explores the breakdown of self and mental health as well as existential questions in a world where we construct new realities and selves to fill a 'virtual' space.

Lain is drawn and voice directed differently baed on the which aspect of her personality she takes on.

A diligent denizen of the wired gathered all the boards from the extra features and posted them here.

You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu. There are storyboards on some of the commentary tracks.

___________

pt2: The Howard Stern Show

The First Love that captured David's imagination was the 'shock jock' turned self-styled 'king of all media' Howard Stern.

Howard has certainly become a cultural icon.Stern got his start on radio in 1976. He know from 5 that this was what he wanted to do.

___________

pt1: Weezer's Pinkerton (Album 1996)

Keith's first love is the second album form Weezer.

After the first album was a runaway hit the second album was met with a harsh critical eye.

The original line-up (1992). The band shifted drastically after Pinkerton.

El Scorcho was one of the singles off the record.

You can purchase Pinkterton on iTunes and Amazon or stream on Spotify.

___________

pt4: "Pinhead" from Leave Home by the Ramones (Song 1977)

This week is a great pick from Keith a 4 issue mini-series from writer Zeb Wells and artist Seth Fisher.

Leave Home was their 2nd album - released in 1977.

Schlitzie, from Tod Browning's 1932 film "Freaks," was microcephalic performer Simon Metz from New York. The Ramones were inspired by this performance to write their track "Pinhead."

The pinhead costume sported at Ramones' concerts.

The iconic phrase at a show.

You can purchase Tod Browning's Freaks on Amazon or iTunes.

You can purchase Leave Home on iTunes and Amazon or stream on Spotify.

___________

pt2: Korn "Freak on a Leash" (Nu-Metal Music 1998)

Adam brought a challenge to the table this week. None of us (Adam included) were/are fans of the Nu-Metal genre. Heck Keith even questions that it is a genre.

This music video features animation from Todd MacFarlane studios- an animation outfit that lasted about as long as the Nu-Metal kick.

Another Nu-Metal band "Slipknot"- such wonderful masks!

You can purchase Korn's album "Follow the Leader" on Amazon.

Limetown

The Message

The Black Tapes

Tanis

Lore

___________

pt1: Freaked (Film 1993)

Jule's pick was the inspiration for this topic. Any reason to watch this Alex Winters and Tommy Stern work of art is welcome. The titles alone are worth the weird. Stop Motion Stratacut clay animation at its strangest- rife with Jan Svankmajer nods.

The title track is Henry Rollins.

Yes that is a wooden Randy Quaid - he may be the best thing about this movie.

Actually- these Rastafar-Eyes may be the best thing about this movie.

They actually made merchandise for this picture- and they are appropriately weird.

You can purchase Freaked on Amazon. Definitely check out Alex Winter's site to see his other project and his info on the movie.
