AUnited States labor agency wants to force Starbucks to reopen 23 stores after it claimed the coffee chain illegally shuttered the locations to block employees from unionizing.

The company shut down 16 locations in July 2022. The closed stores were located in a number of large cities, including Seattle, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Portland, and Chicago.

The National Labor Relations Board stated in a Wednesday complaint that eight of the Starbucks locations were unionized at the time they were shut down. The federal agency claimed that the company failed to notify the workers’ union, Starbucks Workers United, ahead of time about the closures, thereby denying the union the opportunity to bargain, according to NLRB spokesperson Matthew Hayward, Reuters reported.

Hayward stated that the NLRB wants to force Starbucks to reopen the locations, rehire the employees, provide those workers with lost pay and benefits, and bargain with the union.

As we reported Saturday, baseball sensation Shohei Ohtani signed a $700 million mega-deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The guaranteed contract is the richest ever signed in any U.S. professional sport.

But the two-way player received an almost identical offer from another Major League team: the San Francisco Giants, yet he turned it down. The eight-time winners of the World Series pulled out all the stops to try to get Ohtani, virtually begging him to come, but to no avail. 

The question is, why? 

Buster Posey, the onetime franchise Giants catcher and current member of its ownership group, admitted that the city's disastrous decline likely played a factor in Ohtani's thinking.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins is taking heat for recent controversial comments that homeless people “have to be made to be uncomfortable,” a reference to the idea that regularly sweeping encampments encourages unhoused people to accept offers of shelter. 

During a Dec. 4 public forum, dubbed “Take Action: San Francisco,” Jenkins was asked by KGO-TV reporter and former Chronicle columnist Phil Matier if anything “legal” could be done about thousands of unsheltered San Franciscans declining shelter and services. 

Jenkins initially replied that “the recourse is obviously outside the criminal justice system.” 

But when pressed by Matier again, the city’s top prosecutor continued, “They have to be made to be uncomfortable is the truth of the matter.”

Cops are fleeing a major city previously declared as the nation's murder capital, with officer staffing hitting its lowest level on record, according to police data.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, like many law enforcement agencies across the country, has faced significant departures that it's struggled to replace, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Monday. The department is budgeted for 1,224 officers, but has over 300 vacancies, the data show.

"I’ve never heard of anything that low," the business manager for the St. Louis Police Officers Association, Joe Steiger, told the Post-Dispatch. "When I started back in 1995, there were closer to 1,600 officers, and now they’re down under 1,000. That’s just crazy."

The police department has dropped annually since 2020, according to SLMPD data. There were just over 1,200 commissioned employees at the start of that year, but dropped to 1,198 in January 2021, and finally to less than 1,130 last year, Fox News previously reported.

You might find this hard to believe, but some places in the country are actually prosecuting the organized shoplifters plaguing retailers.

For example, a pair in Parker, Colorado, known as the KitchenAid Crew just went to trial over their shoplifting spree stealing, well, you can guess.

Michael Green, 50, and Byron Bolden, 37 were both convicted for felony retail theft.

The documented value of the items stolen was $2,094.98, and a sixth-degree felony theft charge in Colorado includes a total value between $2,000 and $5,000.

Since it was just $94.98 that separated the pair from a felony and a misdemeanor, their lawyer tried to argue the charge down because the merchandise they stole could have been bought for less than the documented value on sale and with coupons for store discounts.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu defended holding a holiday party for “electeds of color” just hours before hosting the controversial gathering inside the city’s official reception hall Wednesday.

Wu admitted it was a mistake that every member of the Boston City Council received invitations to the controversial holiday party, and had already talked to those that were uninvited.

“We had individual conversations with everyone so people understand that it was truly just an honest mistake that went out in typing the email field,” Wu told reporters.

Wu, Boston’s first female of color and Asian American mayor, came under fire when her director of City Council relations, Denise DosSantos, sent an exclusive party invitation to all members of the City Council instead of just the select invitees.

On Friday, a Multnomah County judge issued a warrant for the arrest of an alleged fentanyl trafficker—less than 24 hours after he’d already been arrested with 11 million doses of fentanyl. The court published that warrant online this afternoon.

The warrant was issued a day after Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputies raided a Northeast Portland Airbnb rental they allege was the center of a fentanyl dealing operation that produced the biggest bust in agency history. They arrested the alleged ringleader, Luis Funez, as he fled out the back of the house.

WW reported over the weekend that Funez had been released from jail Thursday and didn’t appear in court the next morning. Now, the court has confirmed that a warrant is out for his arrest.

“We are in communication with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners, and we are committed to bringing Mr. Funez to justice,” says the Sheriff’s spokesman, Chris Liedle.

City Hall has taken steps to help migrants leave New York City by offering them free fare to anywhere in the country or world and made life tougher by limiting shelter stays. Wait times to get a bed can stretch as long as a week.

Some migrants have had enough. Their city of dreams has become a nightmare.

With winter coming, many have reached new lows and levels of desperation and have decided that a one-way ticket out of the Big Apple is their best shot at a brighter future.

Disillusioned migrants, preparing to leave the city, told the Daily News outside the St. Brigid reticketing site in the East Village that they’re disappointed, struggling to find work and fed up with constantly having to move because of a rule put in place in October that limits their time in homeless shelters to just 30 days.

Andres Buitrago’s hopes of finding a version of the American Dream kept him going while he navigated the notorious Darien Gap and traversed hundreds of miles on foot and by train on his monthslong trek to reach the United States.

On Friday, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office announced its biggest fentanyl bust to date, after raiding two houses in Northeast Portland and Oregon City on Thursday and finding the equivalent of over 11 million doses of fentanyl.

It was “one of the largest illegal fentanyl seizures in state history,” according to a Dec. 9 statement from the sheriff’s office.

But the fate of the alleged ringleader remains unclear. Luis Funez, 23, was arrested fleeing from his house in Northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood. He was booked in jail on outstanding warrants and then released, with instructions to return to the courthouse the following morning. Court records say he did not show.

The sheriff’s office says the case has been referred to federal prosecutors, but charges related to Thursday’s bust have yet to be filed. And the whereabouts of Funez, who recently arrived in Portland by way of Sacramento, remain unclear.

A day after walking out on a Village Board meeting, four Dolton trustees at odds with Mayor Tiffany Henyard held a special meeting Tuesday to approve a tentative tax levy and talk about a village that remains divided.

Meeting at a Dolton Park District facility with about two dozen residents attending, the trustees said they are trying to be good stewards of taxpayer money, but are being kept in the dark about the true state of village finances.

Trustee Jason House, selected to lead the meeting, told residents trustees were not supplied with sufficient information about agenda items to be acted on at Monday’s meeting, and said the information they received came late.
