According to local reports and interviews, New Yorkers living in public housing are competing against tens of thousands of newly arrived migrants to New York City when it comes to meals this Thanksgiving.

“Why do we have to take the butt of everything,” New Yorker Georgia Butler told FOX5 New York in an interview. “This community is already suffering.”

“[The migrants] were first in line for the turkeys this morning,” Butler continued. “They tell you to be there at 11 o’clock. You get there at like 10:30, 10:45, but they are already out there. The line is from over there to over here.”

According to FOX5 New York, New Yorkers living in public housing have seen some 8,000 migrants move into their neighborhoods after having arrived at the United States-Mexico border and being released into the nation’s interior.

Already, low-income New Yorkers are dealing with strained resources. This week, city officials said they would offer $15 gift cards to those in public housing who have been forced to go without gas to cook meals for months.

The future of Washington’s carbon emissions laws may be decided by voters.

On Tuesday, backers of an effort to repeal the state’s carbon market announced they have enough signatures to put it before lawmakers and, possibly, voters next November.

The citizens’ advocacy group “Let’s Go Washington” turned in more than 400,000 signatures for Initiative 2117. The measure’s supporters say it would repeal the climate law — which they blame for high gas prices in Washington.

Standing outside a Shell gas station in Kent, hedge fund owner and Let’s Go Washington founder Brian Heywood said they have more than the minimum 324,516 valid signatures needed — packed in boxes and loaded into a truck, which the group then delivered to the Secretary of State Steve Hobbs’ office in Tumwater to be verified.

An Oklahoma City business that sits in a heavily populated homeless neighborhood has been issued a citation by the city, saying the company is responsible for trash that sits in an alleyway next to their business. The company claims the trash does not belong to them and turned to KFOR for help.

KFOR went to the property on Tuesday and found trash in the alleyway. There were clothes, empty beer cans and much more that would likely not belong to a company that makes signs.

“We have to clean up feces off the back of our building all the time. There’s needles. It’s a safety concern for us, and now we are either forced to approach them or be fined,” said Taylor Morris, J&B Graphics.

In a letter obtained by KGW sent to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler earlier this month, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt outlined his concerns with Portland’s daytime ban on homeless camping.

The ban itself has been somewhat of a never-ending saga, leaving Portlanders confused over how it would be enforced, which was the crux of Schmidt's letter. If a homeless person violated the ban three times, they could face fines or jail time. 

Though unable to talk with KGW on camera, Schmidt’s letter stated that the ban required Portland Police officers to give his office the following documentation when someone violated it:

Police report(s) documenting the date, time, location, and nature of the camping violation on each of the three dates.
Copies of the two prior written warnings required by PCC 14A.50.025(A).
If police are issuing a citation on the grounds that the subject is not “involuntarily homeless,” in addition to the items listed above, we also need an identified witness, with contact information, who can establish that shelter or other options for housing were accessible to the subject on each date in question.

A growing rift between Target corporate crime policies and law enforcement was highlighted by Sacramento County Sheriff and former Assemblyman Jim Cooper during the weekend, who said that Target has been asking law enforcement not to arrest people in stores despite being called out over multiple crimes occurring inside.

For several years, Target, like most other retailers in California, has struggled with crime. Stores in urban settings have resorted to using glass cases in the aisles that can only be opened by employees to deter shoplifting. At others, more enhanced forms of security have been developed. Most retail stores, including those other than Target, have also instilled rules that prevent intervention by employees during robberies because of possible problems that can occur, and leaving the matter largely to security or police.  And, despite the extraordinary precautions, Target has still closed many stores, primarily in the Bay Area, because of the massive amount of crime.

However, criminals going after Target and the numerous arrests have caused some negative PR for the company. Many with Target, as well as other retail locations, also fear a national backlash when video of people arrested for shoplifted are made public. They also want to avoid shootings or major injuries, such as a security guard shooting and killing a thief who threatened to kill him at a San Francisco Walgreens earlier this year. As a result, many stores have put in policies that don’t allow law enforcement to make arrests in stores.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday that the burned stretch of I-10 shut down since the weekend in Los Angeles would at least partially open by the end of the year, with speculation growing that homeless people may have been responsible for the fire.

The fire first began in the early hours on Saturday when a fire erupted at a wooden pallet storage yard near the I-10 freeway. The blaze quickly spread to around 8 acres, with the interstate being so damaged that steel guardrails and concrete pillars had begun melting. While the fire was ultimately contained by the LAFD and put out later in the morning with no injuries or loss of life, fire and transportation officials closed a portion of I-10 between the Alameda street exit and the I-5 interchange indefinitely.

In the following several days, Governor Newsom has declared a state of emergency because of the closure of a highway serving 300,000 people daily, Mayor Karen Bass has petitioned the U.S. Department of Transportations for repair funds, and Caltrans has set up detours around the damaged section. On Monday, Newsom then announced that the fire was arson, with an investigation of the site holder underneath the freeway section being investigated by both state and local officials. Cal Fire, meanwhile, would continue their investigation on who exactly started the fire and how.

The Port of Seattle is installing tampon dispensers and dispenser trash bins in men’s bathrooms as part of a plan that will soon impact the entire airport. One was even installed in the men’s bathroom before being installed in the women’s bathroom.

Chief Michael Villa, chief of the Port of Seattle Police, emailed staff to clarify why “period product dispensers” were installed in all office bathrooms. He said that he “made some calls and learned that a workgroup explored this issue a couple of years ago.” The chief also said that it is now Port policy to have “all employee-facing restrooms” feature the dispenser and a trash can in every stall. He told employees to expect this policy to be extended to all public-facing restrooms next year.

According to an employee who reached out to The Jason Rantz Show on KTTH, the odd phrasing of the chief’s email, forgoing language like “tampons” or “feminine hygiene product,” was due to woke internal politics. “He wasn’t able to write ‘feminine hygiene’ because feminine isn’t inclusive and hygiene implies it is dirty,” the source explained.

A band on tour hit a speed bump while stopping in the Rose City after their equipment was stolen from a hotel parking lot.

Frank Ray, a country singer, said his band was staying at the Portlander Inn, and the stolen equipment amounts to more than $15,000 worth.

“Certainly not the welcome we wanted coming into Portland,” he laughed, “but it doesn’t speak for the community as a whole. It’s just a couple bad people out there.”

Ray said he’s played music in just about every state, and said the van is full of what he called their “tools for work” that have to go on the road.

“Unfortunately,” he recalled his former job, “I’m used to receiving calls like that after 10 years in law enforcement myself.”

The Texas House has approved Senate Bill 4 — a proposal to create new state penalties for people who illegally cross into Texas through the state's southern border and that allows magistrate judges to order those accused of illegally entering the U.S. to return to Mexico or face prosecution.

The House on Tuesday night passed the bill — which has been debated several times in both legislative chambers in recent weeks — by an 83-61 party line vote despite opposition from Democratic lawmakers and rights advocates over concerns the legislation is too broad and it could potentially affect everyday Texans through the state's attempt at immigration enforcement.

"Senate Bill 4 is the broadest, most invasive piece of legislation to ever potentially challenge the very nature of our federal and state power," said Rep. Victoria Neave Criado, D-Dallas, during the debate over the bill on the House floor Tuesday. "The power to enforce immigration is unquestionably exclusively a federal power."
