Another downtown Portland business is calling it quits. 

Coava Coffee on the corner of Southwest 12th Avenue and Jefferson Street announced Monday that its last day in that location would be Thursday. The business cited extreme violence and criminal activity that has gotten increasingly worse. Coava’s remaining two locations on Southeast Hawthorne and Southeast Grand will remain open.

"All of us at the café feel a little distraught," said barista Chance McCloud.

Despite the emotional toil of the closure, McCloud noted that staying open was not a safe option.

"We had a window that was shattered during business hours and we also had a chair thrown last Wednesday at this window," McCloud said. "People feel unsafe and it's very traumatizing."

McCloud said he and other employees wanted to work at Coava to make good coffee in a safe in an inviting space for people to enjoy. For his part, he never thought that would include hazard pay and de-escalation training, two possible solutions managers used to help keep employees safe.

San Francisco's former fire commissioner was brutally attacked this week after a "group of homeless people" slashed him with a knife and fractured his skull with a pipe in his own front yard, according to a family friend.

The attack on Don Carmignani happened just outside his home in the city's Marina District, his friend and prominent Bay Area lawyer Joe Alioto Veronese revealed on Twitter.

"Last night at 7pm in the marina district at Laguna and Chestnut Street, a friend and former San Francisco Commissioner was brutally beaten by a group of homeless people in front of his home," he tweeted. "He is at SF general fighting for his life. Pray4Him."

Two people were stabbed Thursday at or near stations on the LA Metro Red Line, and the attacker or attackers were still at large.

The first attack occurred at the Metro Hollywood/Western Station. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the victim was stabbed by someone who fled the scene at around 4:55 p.m.

The victim's condition was not immediately available.

The attack caused a brief interruption in service on the Metro B (Red) Line, but all trains were back operating on a normal schedule later Thursday, according to LA Metro.

Then, a 35-year-old man was stabbed at the Westlake/MacArthur Park station on the 600 block of Alvarado Street, the LAPD said. That attack happened around 8:23 p.m.

The man suffered cuts to his neck and upper body, but he was found conscious and breathing, the LAPD said. The attacker was carrying a large knife and ran away.

One of the largest supermarkets in Downtown San Francisco—the Whole Foods Market at Eighth and Market streets—intends to shut down at the close of business Monday just a little more than a year after the store opened, company officials told The Standard.

“We are closing our Trinity location only for the time being,” a Whole Foods spokesperson said in a statement. “If we feel we can ensure the safety of our team members in the store, we will evaluate a reopening of our Trinity location.”

A City Hall source told The Standard the company cited deteriorating street conditions around drug use and crime near the grocery store as a reason for its closure.

Since the start of the pandemic, Downtown has suffered a massive loss in foot traffic due to remote work. Many small businesses have shuttered, while examples of extreme poverty, drug use and mental illness on the street have become more apparent. Fears of a “doom loop” in which a cascade of negative financial impacts compound have spread across the city, and City Hall officials currently expect a nearly $800 million deficit in San Francisco’s budget.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on Saturday that he is seeking a pardon for Daniel Perry, a U.S. Army sergeant and Uber driver convicted of murder in connection to a Black Lives Matter protest shooting in July 2020. According to the governor's Twitter post, he will grant the pardon as soon as a request from the state's Board of Pardons and Paroles reaches his desk. However, he noted that he can only grant pardons on the board's recommendation.

The incident occurred in downtown Austin when Perry, who is white, shot and killed 28-year-old Garrett Foster, also white, who was carrying an AK-47 during a Black Lives Matter demonstration. Perry claimed he acted in self-defense after Foster pointed the weapon at him. A jury found Perry guilty of murder, but the governor believes that under Texas law, Perry was within his rights to stand his ground.

The case has highlighted disparities in how different states handle such situations, with some questioning if Perry would have received the same treatment in states with more progressive district attorneys. Governor Abbott has emphasized that he will work as swiftly as Texas law allows regarding Perry's pardon, sparking a debate on self-defense laws and the role of firearms in protests.

New data show how much Oregon has been impacted by the homelessness crisis since the start of the pandemic, and how we compare with the rest of the county.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Pacific Northwest saw some of the highest numbers of people unhoused from 2020 to 2022: nearly 18,000 in Oregon and more than 25,000 in Washington.

“Those are lists where you don’t want to rank near the top and seeing Oregon there was sad. I can’t say I was necessarily surprised, but it was really sad,” said Jon Seibert, director of programs at Blanchet House. “We know the issue has been getting worse for a few years and we’ve seen that reflected in our numbers, as well, and just anecdotally from what I see here on the ground.”

Drive around Portland and it’s hard to ignore the blocks lined with tents as the homelessness crisis becomes more severe. Now, data is also showing just how much this crisis continues to grow.

“Those numbers stayed really high through 2020, ’21, ’22,” Seibert said. “We just had our busiest month since we reopened indoor services, just last month in March, so while we only have the data through 2022, I’m concerned it probably won’t be much better once 2023 comes out.”

Among the states that saw the largest increases during those two years, Oregon came in fourth with an increase of around 3,300 people, up 22% compared to the year before.

If people like Rohit Singh, who lives in Berkeley, are already planning for Sunday breakfast at Mum's Café in San Francisco's Japantown, it's likely going a big day for restaurant's closing.

"I'm coming here for breakfast tomorrow morning," explains Sigh, standing in front of the restaurant Saturday evening. "When I was told about the place I said, 'Let's join the closing history at least.'"

After 40 years in business, the Tam family is calling it quits.

"My first job there was... making coffee in the back, at age 12," shares Winnie Tam, with a laugh.

Bob Lee, the 43-year-old founder of Cash App and a former executive at Square (now Block), was stabbed to death early Tuesday morning in downtown San Francisco.

Officers responded at 2:35 a.m. to a call reporting the stabbing and found Lee, who was visiting the city after having recently moved to Miami, according to NBC Bay Area. He was declared dead shortly after he was taken to the hospital, per a statement from San Francisco police.

The retail giant has shut down several stores across the country as it endures lower sales than anticipated in specific locations.

Inflation has lowered customer demand significantly, and many Americans are turning to online shopping for greater convenience.

These two factors combined have created what some financial experts are calling the “retail apocalypse.”

It is essentially the perfect storm for retailers to struggle financially, and hundreds have already shuttered across the country.

By the end of May, Target will have joined the club, as it closes four stores not meeting financial expectations.

Sarah Truax had never been to Montavilla Park, so when she pulled into the parking lot just after 4 p.m. on March 15 with her 6-year-old and 3-year-old sons, she made sure to survey the area.

Everything appeared safe as another family enjoyed the early spring weather.

As Truax and her children headed to a grassy area in the park, she said she felt someone following her. She turned around and a woman who appeared to be suffering from a delusion that Truax’s boys were her own began yelling obscenities.

Truax held her 3-year-old and put her 6-year-old behind her as the woman punched her about a dozen times. When she called for help to the nearby family, they did not intervene and left the area.

In the aftermath – Truax managed to hustle her boys back to the car, drive away and call 911 — Truax has wondered what else she or the other family could have done to stop the attack.

Portland police advise people to call 911 first, but as the bureau deals with low staffing, they don’t always come to the scene. In the absence of an immediate police response, numerous organizations teach bystanders how they can safely intervene.

“Thank goodness I was able to get away and I didn’t need anyone, but this is a big issue because, what if I had?” Truax said.
