KIRKLAND, Washington (February 6, 2023) – Pending sales around Washington state reached
the highest level since October and surged nearly 44% from December, according to the January
report from Northwest Multiple Listing Service. Last month’s 5,776 mutually accepted offers
were down about 9% from a year ago, but brokers seemed encouraged by the “favorable spike.”
Prices on last month’s closed sales edged up slightly, at 0.41%, compared with twelve months
ago. The area-wide median price on January’s 3,264 completed transactions $557,250; a year
ago, when there were 5,085 closed sales, it was $555,000. Nine of the 26 counties in the report
had year-over-year price bumps.
“We are seeing multiple offers once again,” stated John Deely, VP of operations at Coldwell
Banker Bain. “It’s not like it was at the peak of the market, but buyers are out there and
competing for properties,” he added.
The selection of properties, based on the number of total active listings in the MLS database,
improved significantly from a year ago, rising from 3,092 listings to 8,220 at month end. That
total, which includes 7,179 single family homes and 1,041 condominiums, was down about
13.2% from December’s selection.
Brokers added 4,925 new listings to the MLS database in January, about 1,000 fewer than the
same month a year ago. Last month’s additions outgained December when 2,980 properties
were added, as well as November, when 4,890 listings were added.

Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson announced a plan Friday to quickly house hundreds of people living unsheltered in and near downtown Portland by guaranteeing private landlords a year’s rent.

The plan will build off the county’s successful 2022 Move In Multnomah pilot program, which used $4 million to place people into 214 privately owned apartments and houses over the course of four months, Vega Pederson said.

After concentrating on downtown, Old Town and the Central Eastside through May, the county will work to house people living unsheltered in the Gresham area for the next many months, she said.

The new initiative, billed as Housing Multnomah Now, aims to better unify local and state efforts to address homelessness. Vega Pederson said the county will spend $14 million on it over the coming 12 months.

The initial focus will be a four-month drive to move 300 people living primarily in tents in and near downtown into apartments. The county would guarantee private landlords it will pay them a year’s worth of rent plus give them other protections such as mediation services if tenant-landlord issues arise

The popularity of ChatGPT, the online chatbot built by OpenAI, has brought many to question the survival of search engines such as Google. Paul Buchheit, the creator of Gmail, has also dropped his opinion on the matter, and he thinks that Google's business will last a maximum of two years, he tweeted.

Launched in November last year, ChatGPT has become the favorite destination to ask questions among millions of users. Instead of delivering a response to a search result that runs into tens of pages, ChatGPT answers the questions in a conversational style, making it easier for the user to ask follow-up questions, too.

Many have wondered if this could draw the curtains on Google's main product, the search engine, much like how Google closed shop for Yellow Pages years ago. Interesting Engineering had previously reported that the instant success of ChatGPT sent Google top executives into a huddle, and the company is now focusing on its artificial intelligence (A.I.) products.

Is the end near for Google?
The company has built its business largely around its most successful product; the search engine could soon face a crisis. As Paul Buchheit elaborated in his tweet, technology like A.I. can eliminate the need for search engine result pages, which is where Google makes most of its money.

Google charges advertisers a fee for displaying their products and services right next to the search results, increasing the likelihood of the provider being found. In 2021, the company raked in over $250 billion in revenue, its best-ever income in its nearly 25-year-old existence.

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The owner of a comic book store in southeast Portland is frustrated after the third break-in in three weeks.

John Thomas has owned Disk Heroes for 10 years, selling vintage comic books and an extensive variety of ‘Magic the Gathering’ cards, but the last three weeks have been the most difficult.

January 16 marked the start of a wave of break-ins, in which he lost $10,000 worth of product.

“They threw a blue anvil - it’s a tool, through the bottom door window and crawled through the door,” Thomas said. “They came behind the counter and cleared off all the books on this rack.”

Nine days later, it happened again. This time, he caught the thieves on camera. Surveillance video shows a sedan parked and two people in frame.

Thomas said they used a crowbar to open the back door and steal more books. They stepped on the glass display cases and shattered them.

Just under than a week later, his store was hit for a third time. Video shows three people stealing more books, sealed product and a whole case of statues.

Seattle Public Health addressed the continuing problem of drug overdoses and deaths in the city and King County as a whole, claiming that racism is one of the reasons for the crisis.

The finger-pointing was part of a statement that acknowledged that from 2021 to 2022 there was a 40% increase in overdose deaths, with fentanyl being a key culprit.

"The underlying root causes that have resulted in the current overdose crisis are, unfortunately, not ones that will be reversed overnight," Seattle Public Health Communications Specialist Sharon Bogan said in a statement to local KIRO 7. "Structural factors, including lack of economic opportunities, social isolation, structural racism, criminalization of substance use disorders, housing stability, and stigma, are just some of the factors that will require long-term, systematic changes and resources at all levels, from federal to state to local."

The statement came amid the revelation that the Seattle Fire Department has dealt with a staggering rise in overdoses in the past year.

The old saying is a conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged.

In Portland, many liberals are dodging stray bullets, losing catalytic converters to thieves, and sidestepping tents. Then they open their tax bills.

Maybe they aren’t voting Republican. But some are voting with their feet, getting the hell out of a city that once stole their hearts, driven away as taxes rise and quality of life declines.

Multnomah County has lost residents for the past three years, according to Portland State University’s Population Research Center. Before 2020, it hadn’t lost people since 1987, and that was just a one-year blip in an upward run that began in 1984.

In the most recent PSU estimate—for the year ended July 1, 2022—the population fell by 2,321. The cause was “out migration,” PSU says, which is a fancy way of saying people bailed.

That may not seem like a lot in a county that had 812,563 residents as of July 1, 2021, but it’s a reversal of fortune for a city that once attracted migrants from other states the way locally roasted Chemex coffee draws men with sleeve tattoos.

SEATTLE — A plan to create a designated lot for people living in RVs in Seattle has stalled while officials search for a property owner who is willing to host the program.

The King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) awarded a $1.9 million contract to the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) last summer with the goal of opening the RV lot as soon as possible.

“If we could just find somebody to be a hero and offer us the 30,000 - 40,000 square feet we are looking for, we could make this program happen very quickly," said Jon Grant, the chief strategy officer of LIHI. "This is a program that would come with 24/7 staffing, case management and services - so there really isn’t a huge risk to the property owner."

The program would allow between 35 to 40 RVs at a time, and the residents would work with caseworkers to connect with long-term housing options.

"This will be a service-rich environment for these folks," said Grant. "They are going to be connected to case management. There will be behavioral services on site. There will be a dedicated focus on housing search. Once folks get housed, the idea is that the RV can be scrapped and taken out of circulation."

Todd Erwin said retail crime is rocking his Colorado Ace Hardware store daily, and the problem that once consisted of petty thieves and small shoplifting has since escalated into something much worse.

"We're getting hit every single day," he told FOX Business' Maria Bartiromo on Monday.

Erwin, whose family has owned Ace Hardware stores for generations, said what used to be recurring petty theft has since become much bolder and more organized, with criminals bringing along tools to get away with larger items.

"It's pretty brazen. They're coming in with organized crime – cell phones, getaway vehicles, working against our management team. The petty theft that it used to be every day, now it's the big, brazen large-ticket items, just walking out of our doors with hundreds of dollars every single day," he said.

Erwin added that thieves bringing in weapons is "definitely a concern" for his employees, but said that hiring security to keep watch would be "extremely expensive."

A city official from San Francisco , California, said the draft plan for black residents to receive $5 million in reparations is not enough for proper compensation.

Supervisor Shamann Walton told National Review Tuesday the 5 million number, which the San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee said would remedy previous discrimination against black city residents, is "much less than a lot of the projections that people say black people should receive for reparations here in the United States.”
