The administration of New York City Mayor Eric Adams has listed a new job for a rat czar to tame the infamous rodent problem in the Big Apple.

The posting, which, is officially seeking a "director of rodent migration" who will work to advance the city's efforts to address policy matters in the five boroughs related to curbing the recent increase of rats during the  pandemic.

"Do you have what it takes to do the impossible? A virulent vehemence for vermin? A background in urban planning, project management or government? And most importantly, the drive, determination and killer instinct needed to fight the real enemy -- New York City's relentless rat population?" the posting reads.

"If so, your dream job awaits: New York's Citywide Director of Rodent Migration."

The tongue-in-cheek posting adds that "rats are not our friend" and are "enemies that must be vanquished."

The role - with an expected pay range between $120,000 and $170,000 -- reports to the deputy mayor for operations and successful candidates are required to be a New York City resident with a bachelor's degree, at least five years of relevant experience and a "swashbuckling attitude, crafty humor and general aura of badassery."

The job posting comes as New Yorkers have increasingly complained about rats.

A North Seattle business fed up with a growing homeless encampment, has been blasting music to get the people who are living there to leave.

The encampment is stationed on a side street at N 128th St. and Stone Ave. North.

Nearby business owners said the Comcast Service Center has been playing loud music from a surveillance system with a speaker for about a month now. The loud music is described as classical or elevator music.

“Classical, all classical, all day long,” said a body shop manager named Tyler. “They came and asked us, ‘we’re thinking about playing some loud music, see if we can get them to move away.’”

Nearby business owners told KOMO News they don’t mind the loud music because they too are frustrated about the theft, drug trafficking, and garbage piling up, which they believe are a result of the encampment.

“They turned up the music, but as you can see it didn’t make a difference,” said business owner John Yang. “It’s unsafe for our employees to park their cars near Comcast, it’s also a deterrent for people to visit our businesses and it’s a safety issue with a nearby high school.”

Yang said their dealership got security after crime started creeping in.

“If we didn’t have that overnight security, we would lose cars, parts of cars,” said Yang.

SEATTLE, December 02, 2022--()--(NASDAQ: RDFN) — A record 2% of U.S. homes for sale were delisted each week on average during the 12 weeks ending Nov. 20, compared with 1.6% one year earlier, according to a new  from Redfin (), the technology-powered real estate brokerage. That share has come down a touch since then, declining to 1.9% during the 12 weeks ending Nov. 27, which include the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sellers are taking their homes off the market because they’re often receiving no offers for the price they want to sell for, and sometimes, no offers at all. That’s due to a sharp drop in homebuyer demand driven by rising mortgage rates and persistently high home prices. While mortgage rates have dipped slightly since mid-November, the monthly mortgage payment on the median-asking-price home is still 40% higher than it was one year ago.

"Some sellers are having a hard time grasping that we’re not in a housing-market frenzy anymore—it’s tough for them to swallow that they missed the boat on getting a high price," said Heather Kruayai, a Redfin real estate agent in Jacksonville, FL. "By the time sellers realize their listing was priced too high, it has already been on the market for too long and is considered stale. I recently had two sellers take their homes off the market after 45-plus

Deaths from drug and alcohol use are rising among America’s seniors.

Drug overdose deaths more than tripled among people age 65 and older during the past two decades while deaths from alcohol abuse increased more than 18% from 2019 to 2020, according to data published Wednesday by the National Center for Health Statistics.

More than 800,000 seniors suffered from drug addiction and 2.7 million suffered from alcohol addiction in 2020, 

In total, more than 5,000 seniors died of drug overdoses in 2020 and more than 11,600 succumbed to alcohol, according to the NCHS data. Though drug overdose death rates are lower for seniors than other age groups, they have increased substantially from 2.4 per 100,000 in 2000 to 8.8 per 100,000 in 2020.

“We’ve got a public health problem coming at our door — these trends have been increasing for a long time now,” said Alexis Kuerbis, a professor at the Silberman School of Social Work and an expert on substance use among older adults.

A car crashed through the glass front doors of REI in Portland’s Pearl District on Black Friday, the store’s third break-in in a single week and the latest in a string of .

The episode is another example of challenges retailers say they face in Portland during what is typically the most lucrative time of year.

The number of burglaries, robberies, vehicle thefts and vandalism are at their highest in Portland since 2019 according to Portland Police Bureau data from the first 10 months of the year. Reported burglaries during that time period have jumped from 3,508 in 2019 to 4,868 in 2022. And between January and October 2022, Portlanders have reported 1,181 robberies, 9,212 vehicle thefts and 9,971 incidents of vandalism, compared with 818 robberies, 5,414 vehicle thefts and 5,151 incidents of vandalism during that time period in 2019.

Meanwhile, police are  to Multnomah County prosecutors, according to data released this month by District Attorney Mike Schmidt.

Inflation, the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and e-commerce are , as more shoppers restrict spending, avoid crowds and hunt for better deals online.

Chicago — The 60-year-old woman who allegedly stole a bag containing $155,000 from a Brink’s truck in Edgewater has no criminal background, is recently widowed, and is experiencing homelessness, officials said during a bail hearing Wednesday.

“I’m hoping that you can be directed to some resources, but I’m, sadly, I’m not sure that Cook County has the resources to direct you to anywhere meaningful,” Judge Mary Marubio told Sharon Carabine-Dierberger. “But I’m hopeful that we can try to accommodate that need.”

Marubio released Carabine-Dierberger on her own recognizance.

The theft occurred as a Brink’s guard was unloading money bags outside Chase Bank, 5715 North Broadway, around 12:30 p.m. Monday. Prosecutors said a witness saw Carabine-Dierberger take a bag of money from the back of the armored car and run away.

The guard, tipped off by the witness, chased Carabine-Dierberger into an automotive store, grabbed the bag from her hand, and walked out. Police arrested her at the Granville Red Line station a short time later.

“Every dollar was recovered,” Marubio noted.

The bank and Brink’s confirmed that the stolen bag contained $155,000, prosecutors said.

The sound of Portland Bureau of Transportation tow trucks echoed from a large  encampment buried in the woods off North Columbia Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon. It’s a camp that’s been growing in the St. John’s neighborhood for years.

“It’s taken a toll on all the businesses out here,” said Jeff White, who runs Curt’s RV and Storage, located right next to the camp. Those living at the camp have targeted his business by breaking in and stealing from him numerous times, he says. “It’s been way too long. I know there’s camps everywhere, but it’s been like six, eight months.”

It was a hectic scene inside the camp on Tuesday as city crews and police worked to clear it. The homeless residents told KGW that some of the towed vehicles were stolen.

KGW reported on the same camp twice this summer. At the time it was known as  and the homeless woman who ran it illegally charged people rent to camp on the government-owned property.

New York Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday directed first responders to enforce a state law that allows them to potentially involuntarily commit people experiencing a mental health crisis, as part of an attempt to address concerns about homelessness and crime.

Adams said it was a myth that first responders can only involuntarily commit those who displayed an “overt act” that they may be suicidal, violent or a danger to others. Instead, he said the law allowed first responders to involuntarily commit those who cannot meet their own “basic human needs” – a lower bar.

New York Police Department officers and first responders will get additional training to help them make such evaluations and a team of mental health technicians will be available, either via a hotline or video chat, to help them determine whether a person needs to be taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

A new state law hailed as “the most expansive and comprehensive record-clearing law of its kind in the country” will seal the criminal records of everyone who’s served their time, though there are a few exceptions for sex offenders and violent felons.

We made note of a few new California laws Governor Gavin Newsom signed in the annual flurry of such things in September, some of which lightened the legal load on  and . But another of those new laws that’s received little notice is a bigger deal for those who’ve actually been incarcerated in California. The New York Times has an analysis of a new state law that  of anyone who’s completed their sentence, once said sentence is completed, in what Jeff Selbin of the UC Berkeley School of Law Policy Advocacy Clinic called “the most expansive and comprehensive record-clearing law of its kind in the country.”

“We cannot continue to pour billions of dollars into rehabilitative services while at the same time exclude people from positively contributing to their communities,” state Senator María Elena Durazo (D-L.A,), who introduced the bill, said in a statement, adding that the new law “will not only benefit the individual, but entire families and communities.”

The sealing of the records is automatic but is not quite as broad as it initially sounds. The Times notes that “Eight million people in California have a criminal record, and at least 225,000 will have an old conviction automatically sealed as a result of the new law.” That's a fairly small fraction.
