An Oregon man was sentenced to spend more than six years in jail after prosecutors said he tried to steal a car using a lit blowtorch.

Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt said in a news release that Michael Scott Walton was sentenced to 80 months in prison for attempted robbery and attempted assault.

Schmidt said that Walton attacked a man who had just picked up a DoorDash order for delivery from a 7-Eleven. As the victim got into his vehicle, prosecutors said “Walton approached him from behind with a blow torch that was aflame.”

Prosecutors said that Walton used an aerosol to make the flame more powerful, and pushed the flame toward the victim’s head while saying, “Give me your keys!” The victim’s hair was singed by the fire, and parts of his jacket were burned and melted.

“The facts of this case are terrifying. To sneak up on a person from behind with a blow torch and then threaten them is absolutely unacceptable,” said Deputy District Attorney Christopher Shull. “I am satisfied that today’s sentence will serve the interests of justice in this case.”

The victim refused to give Walton the keys, and police arrested him nearby after the victim identified him, prosecutors said. In the news release, prosecutors said there was video surveillance of the incident.

A state administrative law judge has revoked $77,000 in fines that a Portland election official slapped on City Council candidate Rene Gonzalez for accepting a steeply discounted rent on his downtown campaign office.

Susan Mottet, who oversees the city’s Small Donor Elections program, said last month that the cheap rent Gonzalez has accepted from his landlord, Schnitzer Properties Management, counted as an unreported in-kind contribution. Schnitzer Properties Management is owned by Jordan Schnitzer, who has supported Gonzalez’s campaign and donated $250 to Gonzalez — the maximum donation amount allowed under Small Donor Elections program rules.

Violent tension between biker gangs in Chicago, Illinois, is reportedly escalating following years of relative peace.

Chicago’s infamous Outlaws Motorcycle Club is warring against the Mongol Nation Motorcycle Club, a rival group that has reportedly been crowding in on the Outlaws' turf in the city, according to bikers and police sources who spoke to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Multiple shootings between the gangs have recently taken place in the city, according to Chicago police reports.

The Nike Community Store in Northeast Portland is filled with neatly folded shirts, racks of athletic apparel and rows of Nike shoes — but no customers. The store quietly closed weeks ago and the company won’t say when or if it will re-open. Nike corporate did not respond to three different emails.

"Closed for the next 7 days," Nike posted on its website. The same message has appeared since late October. Despite the notice posted online, customers show up at the store almost every day.

"There’s nothing on the door. It doesn’t say anything," said Carmelleta Nash-Pronold after finding the Nike store closed on a recent weekday afternoon. "Usually stores let you know what’s going on."

A controversial new ordinance designed to get more homeless people into shelters in Tacoma goes into effect Monday.

Those who break the new law face fines and jail time.

No one will be forced out of an encampment Monday. Two-week notices will go out to encampments that are near a homeless shelter.

City leaders said they are trying this approach to get more people off the streets and into housing.

It is not news to anyone in this encampment that the city of Tacoma wants them out.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” a man said from inside a tent. “I’m actually ready to do it right now, just to be ahead of them. You know what I mean?”

He won’t have to move just yet.

But the city’s ban on camping within a 10-block radius of a homeless shelter does go into effect Monday.

“It’s inhumane to just let people live on the streets in encampments,” John Hines said. “And let’s try to find ways to get them into shelters as fast as we can.”

Hines, a Tacoma native and city council member since 2019, said he drafted the ordinance to address the issue of homelessness and encampments.

Road rage incidents have been increasing in Western Washington over the past few years. 

On Friday, a nine-year-old boy was shot in Renton and less than a month ago, a 24-year-old woman was shot and killed in a road rage incident in Skykomish.

Law enforcement officials in multiple Western Washington counties are seeing drivers become more aggressive.

“We've seen a lot of erratic behavior on our on our roadways,” said Sergeant Darren Moss Jr., the Public Information Officer for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

He said sometimes aggression can progress into violence.

“We've had a couple instances of people pulling guns out on someone else or flashing a gun in their window at somebody,” said Sergeant Moss.

He said in Pierce County they have seen an increase in road rage incidents, but not in road rage shootings.

In King County, there have been more road rage incidents involving guns over the past few years. According to Washington State Patrol, King County road rage shootings have been increasing since at least 2017. 2021 was the highest total during that period.

A national leader in setting standards for healthcare organizations handed down a "preliminary denial of accreditation" to Kitsap County’s St. Michael Medical Center.

St. Michael Medical Center recently came under scrutiny after it was reported in October that a nurse in the emergency department called 911 requesting Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews to help with patients amid staffing issues.

Staff at the hospital later called for a leadership change and resignations after reaching a "breaking point."

St. Michael Medical Center, located in Silverdale, could lose its accreditation after more than 30 standards were found to be out of compliance, according to a quality check report filed on Sept. 6, following an on-site survey.

SEATTLE, Wash. — A very popular video game store, Pink Gorilla, is opening up another shop in Capitol Hill after having several break-ins in recent months, including an armed robbery just last month.

Owner Cody Spencer told KOMO that he decided to open up another store because of the recent break-ins. “We’re going to need to move quickly, this is too many too quickly and an armed robbery it’s just too much all at once,” Spencer said.

Just last month, an armed robber went inside their Pink Gorilla store in the Chinatown International District, where two employees were held at gunpoint. Spencer said they also had the store broken into four times in the last six months.

“Before we can even implement new security measures they were happening again and again and again, I think we got broken into the back-to-back nights,” said Spencer.

Prominent businesses in Long Beach, California, are threatening to pack up and move if issues such as crime, drug use and homelessness are not addressed, according to a local report. 

"Customers don’t feel safe," District Wine owner Angela Mesna said this week, according to the Long Beach Business Journal. "My staff are afraid. We all carry pepper spray just to serve our customers on the parklet."

City leaders are planning to hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss crime issues in the area and how to keep businesses such as Mesna’s from moving out of the downtown area.

"The situation in Downtown is desperate, sad and disappointing. We are close to having very few choices to save our Downtown spot," Beachwood Brewing co-owner Gabriel Gordon wrote in an Oct. 27 email to the Downtown Long Beach Alliance, the outlet reported.

The Tehama County Sheriff's Office has announced that, as of Nov. 20, there will be no daytime patrols anywhere in the county. 

The sheriff's office said in a statement released to the press that the drastic decision is necessary as they "manage a catastrophic staffing shortage throughout the agency."

"Over the past several years, the Sheriff’s Office has had difficulties with recruitment and retention of employees, which has been directly linked to pay disparities," the statement read. "A drastic rise in attrition, coupled with the inability to present enticing recruitment efforts have resulted in an unprecedented staffing shortage."
