Downtown Seattle and Pioneer Square have become so dangerous that the King County government will now have security escort employees to the bus, train, or ferry for their commute home.

The county’s Walking Bus pilot program was announced internally to employees on Wednesday at the downtown campus, located at the King County Courthouse. Two security escorts will walk employees from the courthouse to the King Street Station and the Colman Dock. Additionally, they will escort staff for several blocks to get to their cars or bus stops safely.

The move comes after years of security complaints from county staff due to the growing and aggressive homeless population that has consumed the neighborhoods.

It has become a familiar sight at many homeless encampments in the city: An orange glow from a fireball erupting among the tents.

On Wednesday evening, it occurred under the West Seattle Bridge and at an encampment located across the street from Chelan Café, where Jillian Meador is a regular customer.

“And it seems to be spreading in Seattle," she said. "That hits way too close to home."

Seattle firefighters a day earlier also extinguished a smaller blaze at Ballard Commons Park that burned down a tent and scorched nearby trees. The latest encampment fires now exceed 1,200 so far this year, a new record with just under two months before 2021 ends.

John Peterson, a third-generation turkey farmer, has had customers come to his Ferndale Market in Minnesota lately asking whether they’re going to run out of turkeys heading into Thanksgiving. Everything feels scarce right now, and people assume turkeys will be, too, even though from where Peterson’s sitting, that’s not really the case. “We don’t have any reason that we should run out of turkeys,” he says. “We’re growing the same number of turkeys that we did a year ago.” That translates, for his farm, to 150,000 turkeys annually.

Still, the concerned customers are on to something. There isn’t a mass turkey shortage, but the birds may not be as easy to get at the grocery store right now as they have been in years past. Or at least, not the turkeys meat eaters want.

An estimated 46 million turkeys are eaten each Thanksgiving in the United States, and nearly 9 in 10 Americans eat turkey on the holiday. Thanksgiving is the turkey industry’s Super Bowl, and this year, like last year, that main event is going to look a little bit different. According to the USDA, frozen turkey inventories are 24 percent below their three-year average volumes, and production of turkeys is down compared to the average year.

During the Covid pandemic, home prices have shot up nearly nationwide while household income fell.

As a result, homeownership became out of reach for many would-be buyers.

However, affordability was a growing problem well before 2020 and the start of the pandemic.

In the last decade, the median home price rose roughly 30% and incomes crept up just 11% over the same time period, according to a Bankrate analysis of data from the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index.

Over 50 years, the difference is even more striking. After accounting for inflation, home prices have jumped 118% since 1965, while income has only increased by 15%, according to a separate report by online brokerage Clever Real Estate, based on Census data.

Homeowners are taking advantage of a global housing boom by pulling equity out of their homes at the highest volume since the financial crisis. 

In the U.S., homeowners withdrew $63 billion in equity from their properties through more than 1.1 million cash-out refinances in the second quarter of the year — the largest quarterly volume since mid-2007, according to data company Black Knight. Just under one in five American homeowners say they have pulled money out of their properties in the last year, according to a survey in late October by market research firm Harris Poll, with another 18% saying they are considering it.

Homeowners elsewhere are also finding the idea attractive. In the U.K., net equity withdrawals topped 13 billion pounds ($18 billion) in the first half of the year. That’s the first time since 2008 that Britons took out additional equity instead of injecting cash into their homes, according to Bank of England data.

Online shopping can be dangerous, as the US property website Zillow has belatedly come to realize. While many of us wasted countless hours during the pandemic clicking through real estate listings on Zillow and daydreaming about the sort of pad we’d buy if we had deep pockets, the company was running a side-business, separate from its property searching website, in which it deployed algorithms to help it buy houses themselves and then flip them.

It did a lot of buying, but hasn’t been so great at the selling. This week the company announced that its home-buying division, Offers, had lost more than $300m over the last few months. Offers will now be shut down and about 2,000 people laid off. Zillow reportedly has about 7,000 homes that it now needs to unload; many for prices lower than it originally paid.

King County has received complaints about 150 businesses as of last week that members of the public feel haven’t been complying with a new countywide policy requiring patrons to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test, according to the county’s public health department.

The new requirement went into effect about two weeks ago, and applies to bars and restaurants with indoor dining, gyms, theaters and museums in King County. The rule also applies to conferences and conventions, and any large outdoor gatherings with more than 500 people — though children under age 12 are exempt.

The county has followed up with five of the 150 businesses where complaints were “particularly concerning,” Kate Cole, a spokesperson for Public Health – Seattle & King County, wrote in an email. She declined to give further information about the establishments.

An RV that had been parked in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood that prompted concern from residents and businesses is back.

Bigger and taller than ever.

“This has just gotten worse and worse and worse," said Carolyn Boyle, owner of a food delivery company called New Roots Organics. "There’s no enforcement."

A makeshift upper deck is being constructed again on the vehicle parked along 8th Avenue NW in Ballard near residential streets and several shops, including the Sunny Honey Company.

“I thought it was going to be taken care of and dismantled,” owner Anne Smith said, adding that she is dismayed about the latest development. "There’s no ramifications (for) any of the behavior."

Retailers and logistics experts have warned that supply-chain problems will make certain items more expensive or difficult to obtain this holiday season. They're urging people to start shopping early, well before Black Friday, if they want to ensure they have presents — and a tree to put them under. 

"Supply-chain disruptions have really been impacting the retail industry since the start of the pandemic," Katherine Cullen, National Retail Federation's senior director of industry and consumer insights, told Insider. 

The problems have been piling up for over a year and a half, compounding one another. "There are many links, and if a link is broken, then the stuff doesn't move," said Rosemary Coates, president of Blue Silk Consulting and a global trade expert. She calls it a supply-chain reaction.

The Portland Police Bureau currently deploys fewer sworn officers — 789 — than at any point in the past in 30 years, according to the bureau and an analysis of records by The Oregonian/OregonLive, even though the city added more than 165,000 new residents over that period.

Why? One big reason is the city’s growing struggle to hire new cops and retain the ones it has.

Ten years ago, Oregon’s largest city had nearly 1,000 working sworn officers, from those driving patrol up to the chief. But that number stands below 800 today – in part because city leaders have shrunk the number of authorized positions but mostly because an unprecedented 127 sworn positions are vacant.
