In today’s episode we take a look at two famous cases in their day involving shopkeepers. 
We have covered before how dangerous being a housemaid could be – today we look at the dangers associated with being a shopkeeper.
Our first story from 1872, named the Hoxton Horror by the press, sees mother and daughter shopkeepers bludgeoned to death in mid-day on a busy street.
Our second story from 1903 involves a recently released prisoner who has come up with the perfect plan to gain his fortune quickly by gaining the trust of shopkeepers and their families, annihilating them, and then taking over their business, property and households.
Two gripping cases of shopkeepers horrifically slaughtered in Victorian and Edwardian England is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.

The Bermondsey Tragedy  - Murderous Mondays
News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840
This story from 1872 Bermondsey – not to be confused with the famous Manning case which occurred some 23 years earlier also in Bermondsey - titillated the public with its whiff of illicit relations, jealousy, brutality and ultimately, murder. 
The crime itself was clearcut.  What became almost of more interest in the papers was the actions of the murderer after the crimes.  This case also became a bone of contention for several weeks after the verdict – was he or wasn’t he insane?
We take a look at the buildup, the crime, and the murderer in today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.

The Leveson Street Horror - Serial Killer Saturdays
News of the Times Episode 211 | 1849
Today’s shocking story from 1849 was considered so hideous that the city changed the street name where the crime was committed. 
Heavily pregnant Anne Hinrichson, whose husband is away, is having a normal day with her two small children and her maid who helps in the house.  Anne has recently taken in a boarder to bring in some extra money.
What happens next created a brutal scene of horror for all unfortunates in the house.  The terribly botched execution which followed was regarded by some as being true justice to the criminal.
We take a look at the horrific murders and the capture of the “monster”, as he was named in the press.

Family Killings in Ripon - Frightful Fridays
News of the Times Episode 210  | 1874
1874 was a remarkable year in Ripon North Yorkshire with two unrelated cases of family members killing other family members.
Our first case is a soldier on return to his parents’ home.  It is not a happy return and William is eventually asked to leave the home by his father.  On the day of his departure his 16 year old sister follows him.  She is found dead with her dress above her knees.  William has disappeared.
In our second story, poor Ann Barker, known to be physically and verbally abused by her husband and adult children is violently slain in the cellar.
Both cases put forward the insanity defence, but only one of the appeals succeeded.

Scotland Yard Casebook - The Islington Murder

In today’s episode we take a look at a Scotland Yard case from 1840 – The Islington Murder – a great story showcasing how Scotland Yard eventually get their man.
A robbery and murder of a wealthy older man, not shy of flashing his cash, takes place.  It does not take long for the police to trace evidence to a primary suspect, but, despite the evidence, he gets off!
However, Scotland Yard remain undismayed and set out quite a clever trap for their man by appealing to his greed, and in some measure to his stupidity.
A twisty turny tale from the Scotland Yard archives is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.

Terrible Theodore Gardelle - Murderous Mondays
News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840 
It is 1761 London, and Theodore Gazelle, a Swiss painter drawing inspiration from his visit to England, is slighted by his landlady’s non-appreciation of his work.  Words are exchanged leading up to a violent incident.
Gazelle’s actions after the event drenches a room in blood and takes workmen hired by the police to find the various body parts sprinkled around the house.  Art detractors beware!

The Inn of Death - Serial Killer Saturdays

It is 1831 and we are in France.  Travellers in the Ardeche passing the Red Inn are vanishing along their way.  Neighbours complain of terrible smells being regularly emitted from the Red Inn chimney.  Under breath mutterings speak of body parts being used in stews and pates.
The isolated Red Inn run by the Martin family became legend as 109 witnesses attested to diabolical events surrounding visitors to the Inn and the meals served there.

A seemingly average Victorian family in 1882 is anything but! The scandal filled family, with the genteel façade, holds dark secrets between the various family members with behaviour from all parties that would raise eyebrows even in today’s more jaded society.

The Dark Side of Lighthouses - Wicked Wednesdays
News of the Times Episode 205 | 1755-1933
In today’s episode we look at some of the dark history surrounding lighthouses.  Madness, fatal accidents, fire and poisoning are only some of the many ways to die in a lighthouse. 
We start with the conundrum – what to do with a dead body in a remote lighthouse?  Throwing it into the sea may very well have other believe it was murder once the relief boat came.  In the famous case of 1801, Thomas Howells come up with the only solution he has – to lash the corpse to the railings outside.  It was said that with the right weather conditions, it looked to ships passing as if a lighthouse keeper was giving a friendly wave from what was actually a corpse.

In 1855, William Dove, a troubled man, is convinced that the wizard he had been seeing for some two years is authentic and can help him to improve his life.  When the wizard proclaims that William’s future holds a new wife – an attractive, auburn haired beauty with money, William sees the likely prospect in his neighbourhood and gets to work.  The only stumbling block – he has a current wife standing in his way.
This story, making national headline, caused a sensation in its day.  It was further fuelled when William’s previous history was revealed and that he had offered his soul to the Devil.
Mr Dove, the wizard and the murder is today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.
