  • Flick Pick – The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) and Tetris (2023)

Flick Pick is a podcast about movies. In today’s episode, Andrew Green reviews two movies. They are The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Tetris.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is – you guessed it – the new movie based on Nintendo’s Super Mario Brothers franchise. Andrew remembers seeing the 1993 Super Mario movie and being crestfallen that his favorite thing in the world as a kid – Super Mario – was handled so poorly. Does this new Mario movie right the ship, or did Andrew take a warp zone to continue looking in another castle?

ALSO, Andrew reviews Tetris, the new Apple TV movie about the fight to secure publishing rights to the famous puzzle game back in the 1980s.

This edition of Flick Pick is a two-fer. Two video games movies for the price of one podcast!

George Springer singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays rallied past Detroit 4-3, handing the Tigers their sixth consecutive defeat. Toronto erased a two-run deficit in the ninth on sacrifice flies by Whit Merrifield and pinch-hitter Alejandro Kirk after reliever Trey Wingenter loaded the bases. Kevin Gausman struck out 11 in eight innings for the Blue Jays, who have won seven of eight. Detroit took a 3-1 lead on Kerry Carpenter’s two-run homer in the seventh. Nick Maton also homered for the Tigers.

Twins 3, White Sox 1 – Gray, Twins take series with 3-1 win vs. White Sox
Sonny Gray threw five scoreless innings in a third strong start to open the season for the Minnesota Twins. He outdueled Lucas Giolito to beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1. The Twins won their third series out of four behind another sharp performance from a rotation that ranks second in the majors in ERA. Gray is 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA. All-Star outfielder Ian Happ and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a $61 million, three-year contract covering 2024-26. Happ agreed in January to a $10.85 million, one-year contract. His new deal calls for a $3 million signing bonus payable June 1 and salaries of $20 million in both 2024 and 2025, and $18 million in 2026. He gets a full no-trade provision and a hotel suite on road trips. The 28-year-old would have been eligible for free agency after this year’s World Series. Happ is hitting .282 with one home run and six RBIs.

MLB – MLB teams extend beer sales after pitch clock shortens games
Thanks to the pitch clock, the action is moving much faster at Major League Baseball games. It also means a little less time for fans to enjoy a frosty adult beverage. To combat that time crunch, at least four teams — the Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers — have extended alcohol sales through the eighth inning this season. Teams historically have stopped selling alcohol after the seventh. MLB games have been considerably shorter this season, largely thanks to a series of rule changes. Through the first 1 1/2 weeks of the season, the average game time was down 31 minutes, on track to be the sport’s lowest since 1984.

  • Full Circle Café in Stevensville approved for outdoor seating amid ‘serious financial challenges’

Outdoor dining is returning once again to Full Circle Café downtown Stevensville.

Village trustees this week approved the café to use two parking spaces outside its storefront from May 1st to November 1st. The cost of renting the two spaces increased from $75 to $200 this year.

The decision comes as Full Circle is experiencing “serious financial challenges,” according to their Facebook page. Last Friday, owners Jayme and Ryan Bendoski asked the community for their help as they try to keep the business open:

We could really use your help right now. For nearly 7 years, we have been blessed to serve this amazing community, and through every obstacle (and there have been many), there have been SO MANY lessons. It seems we are in the middle of yet another learning curve as we currently find ourselves facing some serious financial challenges. We are doing everything in our power to keep our business OPEN and trying to turn things around quickly from the inside out, (i.e., connecting with all of the resources we can find, cutting payroll costs, updating our menu offerings, looking at new ways to serve you, etc.). Frankly, we are making changes to our business model that we should have made a long time ago, but you know what they say about hindsight.

In the meantime, we ask that you send us positive vibes, along with sending as much business our way as you possibly can. We promise to keep you in the loop every step of the way, and we invite you to communicate with us your feedback as we try to find our way through this. Your opinion matters so much.

We’d like to thank the wonderful humans we work with for sticking by us during this uncertain time. We’re asking a lot of our Full Circle Crew right now. We’ve even had to let some really great people go this week. It has not been easy. We ask that you give our team (past and present) lots of smiles and kudos if you have the opportunity. They really are extraordinary people. Every single one of them.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the opportunity to be a part of both your daily routines and your special moments over the years. It has been our greatest honor.

Since then, they say they have been overwhelmed by the support, but still have a long way to go in turning things around.

“Thank you so much for your support over the past few days,” a post on Wednesday said. “We’re taking things day by day, and we continue to be inspired by all of the love you’re sending as we work to turn things around over here. You are SO appreciated.”
