Legalism is a religious approach to a relationship with God that believes He can be pleased through the observance of outward acts. Or, put another way, that all He requires can be satisfied by things we do. However, Jesus said, "If you love Me you will keep My commandments." First comes love, then comes keeping the commandments. Sadly, many are doggedly committed to the commandments, but utterly void of the love. Jesus addresses this through His interaction with the religious leaders of His day who seek first to confront Him over the "tradition of the elders."

Everything Jesus did was to reveal Himself as the Son of God come in the flesh. It was a call to repent, to believe, to embrace Him as the giver of life. Every miracle He did, every healing, every exorcism, every teaching about the kingdom of heaven was a cry to say: "Here I am, your King, your God." Sadly, many missed it then as they do today, but the glory of His Person and the offer of grace still stands to those who embrace Him by faith.

God is on the throne. He rules nations, kings, and over the lives of individuals - over our lives. It is the unlimited power and unassailable purpose of God that is the strength of His people. The events of our nation lead to us to need the reminder that God is working out His will and we need to remain faithful.

"The nearness of God is our good." This is the cry and comfort of God's people in the midst of trials and it is the comfort of the disciples of Christ while on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus is continually demonstrating His glory as the Son of God and His grace as He trains to the disciples to trust Him, follow Him, and remain steadfast through all of life and ministry. Our comfort in trials is that I AM is with us in them!
