The wicked are inexcusably confused about Christ and the driven by a guilty a conscience are wiling to murder the righteous to silence their convicting voice. This is the case of John the Baptist and was the case for the Lord Jesus Christ. The wicked persecute the righteous, yet the death of Christ, foreshadowed in John, was also a glorious portrait of grace as He bore the curse of the Law for us. Ultimately, the 'victory' of the wicked was the accomplishing of the sovereign purpose of God, for His glory and the salvation of His people.
