We welcome 2020 with week 4 of 4 of our end of 2019 review. It’s our notable songs. This always sneaks up on me. Next year I’ll be better. I said that last year too. One year it will happen. At the end of every month I collect our notable songs together. It’s a good way to review and remember the great new tunes of the month.

So what happens is I finish Our Notable Songs of November then I think: Damn. I really need to look back at all the great new music and pick a few favorites. Then the Sunday before that Wednesday I sit down for 5 or 6 hours and listen. And listen. And listen. I quickly put together a list. It’s mostly in order. Then I hope I have time on Monday or Tuesday to listen back again. Shift a song or 3 around.

Yes, it’s an awful way to do it. Yes, I end up missing songs. Yes, I’ll do better. One of these years. Yes, one of your favorites didn’t make it on this list. That’s OK. Also, when it comes down to shifting these songs into the 55 minutes I have per week. Choices need to be made. I have way too many songs I want to play. This year I fit 63 songs in these 4 weeks. I should add another week, but 5 weeks of review, seems a bit too much, no? I do sometimes decide to leave off a great song by a more popular artist. Next is about new. They don’t need NEXT. So it does happen that I leave that song off. That’s just me.

Also, as I stated this is really just one sit down and listen though. This list would change a bit if I listened again the following Sunday and did this process all over again.

I believe this will be our last new music show of the year. Next week. Quite sure I’m going to start 4 weeks of Notable Songs of 2019. A month of our favorites.

Michigander begins this week. It’s a strong start. It’s a good start. It’s on tape so it’s the start. Spoon released on a small 7 inch in 2002. Now it’s on their greatest hits. And like all good greatest hits albums there are songs missing. And it’s a good way to start if you haven’t started listening to Spoon. Although I find that hard to believe. Quite happy to have new Milton in the world. And my kids like Cold War Kids so here they are. We dig a wee bit deep into The Cure live. This one of the Crow soundtrack. One album I keep coming back to is Sturgill Simpson. Man, what a killer album he made.

Paul And The Tall Trees. Some rock. Some soul. Some Americana. Some voice. See what I did there? I know the best jokes are the ones you have to explain. AO featuring Mondo Cozmo. She mellows him out a bit. Holiday single from PJ to get you in the mood. And Yola kills this cover of Elton John.

Courtney Barnett is brilliant. And live, even better. I had no idea MTV was still doing Unplugged and here we are. This wee’s other holiday (not holiday song) is by Paul Kelly. Halfnoise is the drummer of Paramore and friends. Lovely jam here. The Black Keys finish it up. Sounding like the Black Keys you know and love. Or at least know.

Hello lovers. Lovers of new music. I appreciate that you listen to the NEXT. There’s a lot of great music and a lot of places you can find new music. The fact you listen to NEXT means quite a bit.

Let’s get to the music this week. Man, I love this Bleached album. I go back to it time and time again. Beatles. Stones. 1 and 1a. A tie really. Then? I say The Mats. Talk me out of it. You can’t. And I want you to try. This The Glorious Sons song is so now. If I were in high school this song would be on every mix tape. Greg Dulli with his first ever solo album. Best know as Afghan Whigs and/or Twilight Singers. One of my all time favorite concerts was Afghan Whigs. Dulli is a brilliant front man.

The Flaming Lips featuring Colorado Symphony recorded live at Red Rocks. Oh hell yes! And if you haven’t seen a show at Red Rocks you need to make that happen sooner rather than later. One of the most beautiful scenes for live music. Just see anything there. The Rolling Stones live. Take my money. Bob Dylan live – never again.

Beck is back. I’m digging his mellow songs on this album. I like when he bugs out too. I’ll have to listen again. I love the lyrics to this Coldplay song. Also, added bonus they are one of the bands that shocked me when I saw them live. So good. So very good. I knew they would be and they went beyond what I was expecting. Plus, the first time I saw them (many moons ago) I got a great Courtney Love story out of it. So I got that going for me.

Mikal Cronin hangs out in a cabin…gets an album out of it. It’s a time honored tradition. I saw don’t mess with a winning streak. A big welcome back to Alanis Morissette and look for a broadway show too. Quite sure it’s the 25th anniversary of some album of hers. Hollis Brown has a slightly different sound on this one. I’m digging it. Nice job NY band. I don’t know Beth Hart but if you only judged her on this song…well it’s another reason not to date a songwriter, right? You don’t want that song written about you. More unreleased Prince. I’ve already mentioned the way I feel about this. Look for this song and many more in a box set of 1999. There’s 3 or 4 different verisons/price ranges too. Of course.

This week on Next.

Temples start us off. Seemed like a perfect intro to this week and it flowed quite well into the latest from Tame Impala. See them live. Hint. Hint. Wink. Wink. Nudge. Nudge. For as we all know, or have at least heard me say (or read me write?) live music is good for your soul. Front man of NEXT favorite, and one the greatest live bands, Iâ€ve seen black taxi. This is a solo album by iErza. Mondo Cozmo sounds good on this one. That’s why I played it. Jimi Hendrix. Live. You need more? It’s with his trio. And it sounds brilliant. Drive By Truckers are next. I know it’s been forever and I still miss Isbell. And yes, I like they I get DBT and Isbell solo. Reminds me of Uncle Tupelo. Happy that I got Son Volt and Wilco and (AND) still miss UT. I guess what I’m saying this song rocks. Courtney Barnett does Courtney Barnett things. Sounds great. Duh. Spoon are releasing outtakes, demos, and unreleased songs from their vault. I think they’ve made the right choices through out the years. Still happy to hear their ideas though.

Country tinged and Twin Peaks sound fantastic. The more I listen. The more I like. I’m a fan of “loud” Twin Peaks and am digging this sound too. So I’m saying they have talent. JD McPherson. This song was written for record store day. Love the play on words. I like the two-part harmonies from this dallas band called D and Chi. I don’t watch reality TV. Especially, singing shows. I guess they tried out for one. Or 2. Iâ€m Not A Blonde came to my attention via Twitter and Italy. How cool is that? I’ll answer. Very. Very cool. And to get you in the holiday spirit the band Joesph give us NYE. Still they best new year’s song is by DCFC. Hands down. Everyone else should just stop trying. They’re all playing for second place. Ozzy Osbourne has a new solo album in 2020 and just released a box set of all his solo albums…just in time for the holiday season. I know strange timing right?

This week music from a Son of a preacher man, Brent Cowles. The Golden Age Of TV is a Uk band that met at Leeds University. Devon Gilfilllian Grew up outside of Philly and yes lives in Nashville now. Shocker. Almost easier these days to tell you who doesn’t live in Nashville. Tendered hearted and fun trio Trash Cat bring back memories of the 90s, no? NEXT favorite Wild Adriatic are Touring Europe right now. Just a brilliant live act. Must see live. Or really it’s MUST SEE LIVE. Plus, they are great guys. That always helps. Juliana Hatfield sounds great on her Police cover album. Off the Later years IE: no Roger Water David looks back and remixes and throws in a few (not many) bonuses.

Welcome back to pop music Rufus. He’s been busy just not with pop music. Sounding fantastic. That Dog. Their first new music in 20 odd years and first as a trio. It sounds like the 90s and Chris Bro Happy Boy. Rodrigo Y Gabriela. Itâ€s been 5 years great to hear them again. Josh Hommeâ€s rotating supergroup back with vol 11 and 12. Deerhunter on this track reminds me a bit of Floyd during animals…a bit.
