This is a hilarious account of one husband's experience of fasting on Karva Chauth. Karva Chauth, on the fourth night of the waning moon, is a day of fasting for many Indian married women, primarily from North and West of the country. The narrator of this satire suffers all through the day from perceived and real hunger when he decides to observe the strenuous fast to spare his wife from having to follow this ritual. Dr Gurnam Singh Tir (1930 - 1991) has been a unique presence in the genre of satire in Punjabi. He was a writer, journalist and lawyer. His popular column 'Chacha Chandigarhia' critiqued political, social, economic and religious realities of the time. He wrote 14 books in all.

Gurbaksh Singh Preet Lari (1895-1977) is a unique signature of Punjabi literature. He was a novelist, short story writer, prose writer and a dreamer. He was an engineering graduate from what is now known as IIT Roorkee, and a civil engineering graduate from Uni of Michigan, Ann Arbor. An idealist, he established Preet Nagar township which was equidistant from Amritsar and Lahore, and where he invited prominent writers and artists like Balraj Sahni, Nanak Singh, Sobha Singh, Faiz, Sahir, Ashq, Gargi, and Duggal to come and live and write. Preet Nagar township had a community kitchen, an activity based school, a park, and spaces for physical, artistic, political, economic activities. Preet Nagar suffered the vagaries of the winds of 1947 when most of its inhabitants migrated to Delhi and other cities. His own family returned to live there with a few other families.

In 1933, he founded a journal called Preet Lari which though struggling, is still being published. The title of this journal gave him the suffix of Preet Lari.

Raghubir Dhand ( 1 November 1934 - 27 December -1990) holds a unique place in Punjabi literature written by diasporic writers. He was born in Sangrur (Punjab) and lived most of his life in England. His short stories are written around the themes of alienation in human relationships, nostalgia and identity. Though he was inspired by authors like Rajinder Singh Bedi, Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi, and Kamleshwar but he had his own unique storytelling style.

Sucha Tilla (Pure Gold Thread) is the story of displacement during 1947, of losing home multiple times. Baba Huqma, a talented shoe-maker, tells his story of chance meeting with another man who also lost his home. Maqsood Saqib (born Sheikhupura, 1954) is a Short story writer, Editor, Translator, and Publisher.

He has published two collections of stories KahaniyaaN (1986) and Sucha Tilla tay Hor KahaniyaaN (1995) . He was the editor of the magazine Ma Boli and now edits Puncham. He has translated four books in Punjabi as well which includes Pankh Mukt (2002) . He runs Suchet Kitab Ghar, a Punjabi publishing house based in Lahore. 'Bhuaa' (Aunt) is a comical description of a guest's plight when he is over-and-force-fed by his old aunt (father's sister) who he goes to visit. The story is reflective of (especially rural) Punjabi hosts' self-expression through hospitality and food even if that means supreme discomfort for the guest.

Nanak Singh was the father of Punjabi novel, but this story of his easily remains one of the most popular pieces in Punjabi literature. Nanak Singh (b.4 July 1897 as Hans Raj – d.28 December 1971) was a poet, songwriter and novelist in the Punjabi language. His writing in support of India's independence movement led the British to arrest him. He published several novels which won him literary acclaim. Born in a poor Punjabi Hindu family in the Jhelum district (now in Pakistan), he changed his name to Nanak Singh after adopting Sikhism. Due to poverty, he did not receive a formal education. He started his writing career at an early age, writing verses on historical events.

In 1945 he wrote his popular novel "Saintly Sinner (Pavitra Paapi)" which won him acclaim. It was translated into Hindi and other Indian languages, and into English by his grandson Navdeep Singh Suri. In 1968 the book was adapted into the successful motion picture, (Pavitra Paapi), by his admirer Balraj Sahni.

"Nanak Singh was the best selling novelist in India for thirty to forty years. He wrote over 50 books including novels and collection of short stories. He made significant contributions to various literary genres. For him character was the determination of incident and incident the illustration of character. His greatest contribution to Punjabi fiction is its secularization. He depicted excerpts from contemporary life cloaked with a veil of romantic idealism." (The Tribune). In his novel Chitta Lahu (White Blood), Singh writes, "It seems to imply that in the lifeblood of our society, red corpuscles have disappeared." 'Main Hun Theek Thaak Haan' (I’m Now All Fine), is a part of Waryam Singh Sandhu's 2000 Sahitya Akademi award-winning short story collection - 'Chauthi Koot' (The Fourth Direction). The short story is a keen insight into the separatist movement and militancy in Punjab in the 1980s. This story is one of the two syntensised to make an award winning film called 'Chauthi Koot' by Gurvinder Singh in 2015. According to the author, this is based on a true story, and this true story may have been of any family in Punjab in those black days - which lived under the shadow of death. The military and the police were a scare in the day, while the militants were a nuisance by the night. This story re-lives the practice of the 'boys' ordering the killing of pet dogs via the use of cyanide capsules (the militants themselves would supply these to families to feed the dogs).

Waryam Singh Sandhu (born 1945) is a prolific author of short stories as well as historical prose in our times. His 9 short story collections paint a variety of life in the rural as well as urban Punjab. Sandhu's critical and historical work includes research on Gadriites, diaspora, martyrs of Punjab. He has been recognised with the most prestigious awards in the literary world. A few of them are Hira Singh Dard Award (1979), GNDU's Bhai Veer Singh Purskar (1980), Waris Shah Purskar (2000, 2003).
