This week on  Next Take Podcast, Canada's own Mikel and Tanyka examine The Fox Hollow Murders as part of their Second Annual Pride Month Series. The Fox Hollow Murders, one of Indiana’s most disturbing and still-evolving true-crime cases. The investigation centers on businessman Herb Baumeister and his 18-acre Fox Hollow Farm in Westfield, Indiana, where investigators discovered thousands of human bones and bone fragments in 1996. Many of the victims were men connected to Indianapolis’ LGBTQ+ community, and authorities believe Baumeister targeted men he encountered at gay bars.

Before investigators could arrest and question him, Baumeister fled to Canada and died by suicide in Ontario in July 1996. He was therefore never tried or convicted for the Fox Hollow killings, leaving major questions about the full extent of the crimes unanswered.

Decades later, the investigation continues. Advances in DNA analysis and forensic genetic genealogy have allowed authorities to identify additional remains recovered from the property, while investigators continue working to give names back to unidentified victims.

The UpStairs Lounge, a gathering place for New Orleans’ LGBTQ+ community that became the site of one of the deadliest fires in the city’s history. On June 24, 1973, a fire tore through the second-floor lounge in New Orleans’ French Quarter, killing 32 people. The tragedy devastated the local LGBTQ+ community and exposed the discrimination many gay and lesbian Americans faced at the time. Despite evidence that the fire was deliberately set, no one was ever convicted, and the case remains officially unsolved.
