NFL Daily

49ers rumors today focus on all of the injuries that have plagued the 49ers throughout the first 3 weeks of the NFL season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan also told the media in his press conference today that wide receiver Jalen Hurd and running back Tevin Coleman could return after the bye to face the Cleveland Browns in week 5 of the 2019 NFL season.

The 49ers already have been solid at cornerback with Akhello Witherspoon and Richard Sherman this season. However, Witherspoon suffered a foot sprain in the 49ers win over the Steelers on Sunday. Witherspoon was seen leaving the stadium in a boot, however a foot sprain is not as serious as originally thought. Witherspoon should be able to return in a month. Who will replace Witherspoon at corner? Should the 49ers pursue Jalen Ramsey through a trade? Thomas weighs in on today’s episode.

On today’s 49ers News and Rumors video, host Thomas Mott updates you on some key players returning from injury. Running back Tevin Coleman was injured in the week 1 win against the Bucs but could return after the bye week. Wide receiver Jalen Hurd has been out for over a month with a back injury but is expected to practice next week. Finally, Thomas talks about Richard Sherman’s quote about Jimmy Garoppolo enjoying getting hit. Most quarterbacks do not enjoy getting hit but it seems like it helps settle Jimmy G down. He seems to thrive under pressure in some games.

Here is the complete list of 49ers news & rumors discussed on today’s show:

- Ahkello Witherspoon injury update.

- Tevin Coleman returning soon?

- Jalen Hurd to practice next week?

- Should the 49ers trade for Jalen Ramsey?

- Does Jimmy Garoppolo like getting hit?

49ers rumors today focus on the details behind what the 49ers offered to the Jacksonville Jaguars for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The 49ers were one of a few teams to offer at least a first round pick plus an additional pick. However, the Jaguars are looking for two first round picks so the 49ers are no longer in the running.

The 49ers have been solid at cornerback with Akhello Witherspoon and Richard Sherman this season. However, Jalen Ramsey is arguably the best corner in the league. It is no surprise that the 49ers would at least make an offer and see what could happen. The price tag of two first round picks is just too much for the 49ers to comfortably pull the trigger on a Ramsey trade.

Mott also previews 49ers vs. Steelers, and gives the most recent update on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ injured running back James Connor and newly traded for defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick. Connor has struggled early this year and sat out practice on Wednesday but should be able to play on Sunday.

Here is the complete list of 49ers news & rumors discussed on today’s show:

- Jalen Ramsey trade offer

- Justin Skule to start at left tackle

- Dee Ford’s injury concerns

The San Francisco 49ers highlights from their 41-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 were impressive, especially on the offensive side of the ball. But what does the game film say about Jimmy Garoppolo’s performance, Kyle Shanahan’s offense and the early success of rookie Deebo Samuel? Tom Downey chose 7 plays from the Week 2 playbook to break down: why they worked, what went wrong and why there is still room for improvement.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s 297 passing yards and 3 touchdowns vs. the Bengals led the 49ers to one of their best offensive performances under Kyle Shanahan. Garoppolo took a big step forward from his week 1 performance against the Bucs, however, he wasn’t perfect. Tom walks through the William Jackson interception and identifies the misread in coverage.

If you like the 49ers game tape segments, let us know in the COMMENTS!

Say it with me: play action is the 49ers best friend. George Kittle was able to make some really good plays on Sunday, establishing himself as one of the best run-blocking and pass-catching TE in the NFL. Kittle’s speed and physicality allow the offense to chunk plays when they’re needed. Jimmy G is also 10 for 10 on play action plays with 2 TDs and no interceptions. I’ll say it again, play action just works!

Joe Staley is out for at least the next six weeks after breaking his leg in the 49ers Week 2 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. While that was the worst news to hit the Niners, their 41-17 win over the Bengals pushed the 49ers 2019 record to 2-0 on the season, tied for best in the NFC West. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will miss the remainder of 2019 with an elbow injury that will require surgery. Big Ben is 37 years-old and left Sunday’s 28-26 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the 2nd quarter and was unable to return. Roethlisberger was replaced by 2018 3rd round pick Mason Rudolph. Rudolph is now likely to be the Steelers’ starter for the remainder of the 2019 season. The Steelers rumors buzzing now are around whether or not this injury will end Ben Roethlisberger’s career.

The Steelers are currently 0-2 and Chat Sports’ Tom Downey is coming at you with 5 QBs the Steelers could sign to replace Big Ben in 2019. Pittsburgh currently only has Rudolph on its active roster after it traded away Joshua Dobbs to Jacksonville last week. Rookie Devlin Hodges is currently on the Steelers’ practice squad.

Tom mentions 10 free agent quarterbacks but who makes our top 5? The notable free agent quarterbacks discussed on today’s show are Paxton Lynch, Jeff Driskel, Cody Kessler, Landry Jones, Devlin Hodges, Kevin Hogan, Mike White, Brock Osweiler, Cardale Jones,Tom Savage. What are the chances the Steelers could sign Colin Kaepernick or convince Andrew Luck to come out of retirement? (We’re kidding…..kinda).

Find out in the video above who Chat Sports’ Tom Downey thinks the most logical Ben Roethliberger replacements are for the Steelers in 2019!

- Paxton Lynch

- Jeff Driskel

- Cody Kessler

- Landry Jones

- Devlin Hodges

San Francisco 49ers Grades from their 41-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals includes all three phases of the game, as well as player grades for Jimmy Garoppolo, Raheem Mostert, Deebo Samuel, Kwon Alexander & K’Waun Williams. Jimmy Garoppolo looked solid as he threw for 297 yards and 3 touchdowns. He looked much more comfortable than he did last week & the 49ers won big. The 49ers’ WR corps also looked a lot better than last week. The most notable WR was 1st round pick Deebo Samuel, who hauled in 5 catches for 87 yards & his first-ever NFL regular season touchdown. Marquise Goodwin also contributed with 3 catches for 77 yards and a touchdown of his own.

The biggest storyline from the 49ers’ week 2 win has to be the Niners rushing attack, which looked great without 2 of their top 3 running backs. Matt Breida had 12 carries for 121 yards, but the player who surprised a lot of people is Raheem Mostert. He had 13 rushes for 83 yards while adding 3 catches for 68 yards and a TD in the air.

On the defensive side of things, the 49ers’ defense looked solid, once again. Andy Dalton threw for 311 yards and 2 TDs, but he was sacked 4 times & picked off once by Kwon Alexander, who was all over the place. He registered 7 tackles, 3 pass deflections & an INT on the day. One 49er who didn’t look all that great is K’Waun Williams. He is struggling in pass coverage & was burnt by John Ross on a seam route.

On special teams, Robbie Gould made 2 of 3 field goals. However, it was penalties & injuries that became costly for the 49ers vs. Bengals. The 49ers lost LT Joe Staley to a broken fibula & he is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. He is not expected to be placed on the IR. The 49ers will need to be more consistent getting called for flags. They were called for 9 penalties worth 75 yards, which is not a good sign. Luckily, it didn’t mean much in this one as the 49ers won big 41-17.

49ers vs. Bengals highlights from San Francisco’s 41-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s week 2 of the 2019 NFL Regular season and Jimmy G and co. breezed by Cincinnati in Paul Brown Stadium. The 49ers improve to 2-0 on the season with back-to-back road wins for the first time since 1989.

Jimmy Garopppolo was 17 of 25 for 297 yards, 3 touchdowns and only 1 interception for a QB rating of 131.2. Two of those touchdowns came in the first half thanks to Marquise Goodwin and Raheem Mosert. And Deebo Samuel got in on the action with a short 2-yard touchdown-- his first touchdown in the NFL. Matt Breida held things down on the ground, with 121 yards and an average of 12.1 yards per carry.

The 49ers did receive some bad news, however, losing star OL Joe Staley in the third quarter. He was able to walk off the field before getting carted into the locker room. Staley was not able to return to the game, leaving rookie Justin Skule to protect Jimmy Garoppolo’s blind side. With Staley out 8 weeks due to a broken fibula, Skule will start in the 49ers home opener against the Steelers-- their first ever trip to Levi Stadium.

The New York Giants kicked off their 2019 NFL season with a 35-17 loss vs. their division rival, the Dallas Cowboys. It was an ugly day for Giants’ QB Eli Manning. He threw for 300 yards & 1 TD, but a lot of those yards came in garbage time in the 4th quarter. Backup QB Daniel Jones came in to relieve Eli Manning of his duties late in the game, so is that a sign that Daniel Jones could replace Eli at some point in 2019? It seems as if Giants fans are ready to move on from Manning & roll with Jones as the leader of the offense.

2 players who had solid performances in week 1 are Evan Engram & Saquon Barkley. The Giants are going to need Engram & Barkley to step up vs. the Bills if they want to avoid a 0-2 start. The Giants have a solid chance of bouncing back in the upcoming weeks with games against the Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers & the Washington Redskins. Chat Sports host Nick Dais previews the Giants vs. Bills week 2 matchup with players to watch & key storylines heading into the game. One player the Giants will need to focus on is WR John Brown, who had a big game vs. the Jets last Sunday. The Giants’ defense needs to be much improved after allowing Dak Prescott to have a field day as the Cowboys’ offense put up nearly 500 total yards.
