Who is at risk for online exploitation? (Ben’s additional notes)

The young people who are at risk online are the same ones who are at risk offline:

Kids who are victims of sexual abuse

Kids who have conflict with parents

Kids who are seeking out sexual content/experiences online

Of even bigger concern is relationship abuse, which happens frequently.

Teens need to learn about healthy relationships as well as healthy sexuality.

  • Social conversations: How to Start a Pig Farming Business

Guest on the line: Gugulethu G. Xaba -Chairman Adamo Holdings (Pty) Ltd / Amandla Omnotho

Pig farming remains one of the most popular agricultural trends in South Africa. There is a large demand for pork in South Africa, and pig farming is a lower-cost/higher-yield option compared to many other types of livestock farming. This makes it a popular option for first-time livestock farmers.

Which Breed of Pig is Most Profitable in South Africa?

There are over 50 breeds of pigs farmed in South Africa for their meat. The most popular breeds are Landrace, Large White, and Duroc.

New pig farmers generally prefer Large White and Landrace breeds, as these pigs breed quickly and have large numbers of offspring. Duroc pigs are known for their excellent meat quality and large growth.

Most commercial pig farmers in South Africa make the most of the characteristics of each pig breed by using generation one cross (F1). F1 is what commercial pig production in South Africa is based on, and it is what helps create the most profitable pigs.

Pig farmers could also opt for more specialist pig breeds if they can find the right market for them. However, these pig breeds, such as the Large Black or Red Wattle Hog, tend to produce less meat at a higher cost, making them less profitable.

Social conversations: Is the Brand South Africa is in trouble?

    - Load-shedding:

South Africans should brace themselves for their first Christmas with load-sheddingin 2022.

For all the years that rotational power cuts have frustrated the country, Eskom has avoided load-shedding over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The same goes for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day — except at the end of 2020, when stage 2 load-shedding was briefly in effect from 00:00 to 05:00 on 31 December.

The historically lower likelihood of load-shedding over the festive season is because Eskom’s most energy-heavy customers — factories, mines, and smelters — shut down operations.

    -Murder

The percentage of households that reported all or some incidences of murder decreased between 2020/21 (100,0%) and 2021/22 (95,0%). The number of incidences of murder increased from 11 000 in 2020/21 to 20 000 in 2021/22.

    Sexual offences

The percentage of households that reported all or some incidences of sexual offences to the police dropped from 69,0% in 2018/19 to 59,9% in 2019/20 before increasing to 88,7% in 2020/21, and then to 90,0% in 2021/22.

Regardless of all the challenges, how do we paint South Africa in a positive image?

  • Closet conversations: When Gifts Aren't Really Gifts?

Guest on line: Mathawe Matsapola -Seasoned Journalist & Editor/Entrepreneur/Certified Life Coach and COMENSA member/ Speaker

Closet conversations: When Gifts Aren't Really Gifts?

A gift is an act of altruism, of generosity. The point of gift-giving is to show love and appreciation for another person. It’s not about a dollar amount. It’s not about custom. It’s about being thoughtful — an important thing to remember with the holidays fast approaching.

When should you look a gift horse in the mouth? Maybe you know right away you’d refuse a very expensive gift, especially if it came from someone who didn’t make a great deal of money. But what about considering the giver? Could there be strings attached to this generous gift? If you accept it, will you be held to certain terms later? Ask yourself these questions:

    · Does this person have a long history of making unreasonable requests or having unrealistic expectations of you?

    · Have they ever brought up something they did for you or gave you in order to coerce you into doing something for them? This could be a case of history repeating.

    · Do you communicate with them regularly? It’s bizarre for someone to send you something out of the blue when you haven’t heard from them in a long time.

    · Is the gift all about the price tag? People who give lavish gifts often do so as a symbol of status. They might even leave on the price tag.

    · Has this person shown a pattern of manipulative behavior? This could mean asking to borrow money, but it could also mean asking for an abundance of emotional support.

    · Is the giver an opportunist? Some people are only there when they need something from you and the opportunity to send you a gift or congratulate you could be an excuse to open the door.

    · In the history of your relationship, have you given more than you received? This question is key. It’s difficult to take inventory of a relationship like this, probably because most of us aren’t walking around asking ourselves, “What have they done for me lately?” It’s also difficult to be honest with yourself when emotional support and friendship is an abstract thing. You can’t hold it in your hand. But in the end there is an appropriate level of give and take that every relationship requires.

“His attacker tried to stab him in the heart but missed and Mr Waluś survived. He was rushed to hospital where he is being treated.”

He had no information on Waluś’s condition. “I just know he is in the hospital.”

  • Social conversations: GBV Discussion: Addressing perpetrators in the abuse discussion

I have been on the receiving end of various forms of abuse: growing up in a domestic violent house, raped at 17, intimate partner violence, and even spiritual abuse.

The overarching narrative is that government needs to do something to stop the abuse when the reality is that a breakdown of families is perpetuating brokenness. I would like to explore how we can address the men who abuse and stop making it a women’s responsibility to leave a bad relationship when everything in society is creating an unhealthy relationship narrative.

  • Legal conversations: Guidelines for disciplinary hearings in the workplace

Employers need to ensure that they follow a procedurally and substantively fair process when conducting a Disciplinary Hearing. Employees also need to be aware of their rights to ensure that they are well equipped for the process. This article endeavours to outline and provide clarity in respect of the steps necessary for a Disciplinary Hearing to be regarded as fair.

Before an Employer makes a punitive or non-punitive decision based on the conduct of an Employee, a Disciplinary Hearing must be held to accurately determine the facts and merits of the charges levelled against and Employee and to allow the Employee to make representations by way of leading evidence, utilizing witnesses in their defense and cross examining the Employer’s witnesses, if any.

This process is governed by Schedule 8 of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995 titled the Code of Good Practice: Dismissal (herein after referred to as “the Code”)
