Scripture: John 11:17-26, 32-35, 41-44
The miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is remarkable in itself. But we also learn much about how we should approach death by how Jesus reacts before actually performing the miracle. And of course, Jesus' resurrection from the dead has the last word and empowers us to not fear death.

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. This is one of the most important declarations he makes about himself, namely that Jesus is the person in which we will find the fullness of God himself. It is only through Christ that we have access to the reality of God.

The top priority for disciples of Jesus is to maintain a vital connection to Jesus. Because he is the vine, only by our connection to him will we be fruitful. The vineyard metaphor is replete with important lessons regarding the source and impact of a real, vital discipleship rooted in Christ.

While being labeled as sheep isn't our ideal description, it is apt and speaks of our vulnerabilty in this world. It also speaks to our need for a shepherd who can provide access, rest, and guidance; Jesus proves that he is our good shepherd, even dying to protect us. He simply calls out to us, inviting us to follow him.

We are surrounded by darkness, which threatens to increase with each passing day. But not only did Jesus declare that he is the light of the world, he is mobilizing his people to be the light. When we follow Jesus, darkness is toppled as we first bask in the light and then shine forth to provide much needed light in this world. | John 8:12-14; Matthew 5:14-16

While in exile to Babylon, the Israelites long for home. But while in exile, God calls them to faithful living. This faithfulness does not involve violent resistance or full conformity; rather, God calls them to a middle ground -- loving their neighbor and the nation while staying true to God. Christians are called to live in this way in this world. | Jeremiah 29:1, 4-14

Moses' bold request to see God's glory is remarkable in itself. But when we dive deeper into Moses' faith and leadership journey and the stakes concerning his ask, we come away even more amazed at how Moses asks- and how God responds. | Exodus 33:12-23

Abraham is our father of faith, even though he was unfaithful at times. His story is of great encouragement to us because the same God who made covenant with Abraham has done so with us. Therefore, we can always rest in God's grace even as we struggle with our unfaithfulness. | Genesis 15:1-21

Knowing that God took exceedingly great delight in creating us imbues us with self-worth and sets us free from the spirit of rejection. But knowing that we're fallen and sinful guards against pride and humanism. Most of all, we are moved to worship our God who created us, then redeemed us. | Genesis 1:27-31
