November 16, 2019 Alastair Higgins - Spartathlon 4th Place, Ultra Running.
In this episode I'm chatting to Alastair Higgins a Scottish International Ultra Runner based in Dublin. Alastair finished 4th in the 2019 Spartathlon, an epic race from Athens to Sparta against a stacked field that included some of the World's top Ultra Runners. We chat about training, racing, nutrition and the mindset required to compete at this level. We also talk about staying injury free and how the decision making process can be affected by the expectations we perceive from others and also impose on ourselves. This year Alastair made some changes to his training and is now coached by Conor Holt & Camille Herron.
I had a chat with Conor during the 24hr World Championships in Albi this year and found it very interesting and informative. Conor will be a guest on the podcast in the near future. #spartathlon #ultrarunning

James Morrissey as part of a 6 person team rowed unsupported from Mainland Europe (Portugal) to Mainland South America (French Guiana), a distance of over 6000Km. On completion of this epic journey the team had set 4 World Records, to be ratified. In this podcast James tells us how he secured a seat in the boat, his motivation to be there and how they managed to complete the journey.

November 01, 2019 Paul Martelletti - Marathon & Ultra Marathon Runner. Team GB.
Paul Martelletti (born 1 August 1979) is a New Zealand marathoner and ultra-marathoner. His notable victories in 2015 included the Greater Manchester Marathon, Bath Half Marathon, Wokingham Half Marathon and Watford Half Marathon. In 2014 Martelletti won the Chelmsford Park Marathon and the Windsor Half Marathon. He also represented Great Britain at the 2014 IAU 100 km World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
In 2016, Martelletti claimed victory at the Brighton Half Marathon for the fourth successive year.
Other Victories
In April 2015, Paul Martelletti ran the quickest ever marathon by someone dressed as a superhero at Sunday’s Virgin Money London Marathon.
Initially clocking 2:30:12, Martelletti’s time was later adjusted from gun to chip time meaning he managed his target of breaking 2:30 with 2:29:57.
In 2014 he won the UK leg of the inaugural Red Bull Wings for Life race, where he outran a chaser car for 69.37km to place 5th in the global rankings.

October 29, 2019 Spartathlon - Anne Jennings, Ultra Runner.
In this episode, Anne Jennings from Ireland talks about her experience at the Spartathlon. Anne is only the 4th Irish Female to ever finish this race which has a drop out rate of over 50%.

1. 1998 - Doina Nugent. 30 hours 58 mins 22 secs.
2. 2016. Bridget Brady. 34 hours 57 mins 13 secs.
3. 2019 - Leanne Rive. 32 hours 55 mins 58 secs.
4. 2019 - Anne Jennings. 35 hours 30 mins 37 secs.
SPARTATHLON is a historic ultra-distance foot race that takes place in September of every year in Greece. It is one of the most difficult and satisfying ultra-distance races in the world because of its unique history and background.
The Spartathlon revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians. According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides arrived in Sparta the day after his departure from Athens.
From 1984 the International Association "Spartathlon" was founded, which since then has continuously organized the race each September. The choice of this month is because that is the time reported by Herodotus for Pheidippides’ run to Sparta.

Alyson Dixon from Great Britain won gold and set a new World Best Performance (currently under ratification process) for 50 km in an amazing time of 3:07:20. She improved on the 30 year old record set in 1989 by South Africa’s Frith van der Merwe 3:08:39. In this episode Alyson is in conversation with Joanna Zakrzewski, the GB Team Manager.

Eoin’s best race results include finishing 5th at the 24 hour world championshipsin Bergamo in 2009, finishing as 2nd place veteran in the 2013 UTMB and 2nd in the 6-day World Trophy race in Hungary in 2015.
In 2016 Eoin won the Spine Race - one of the hardest Ultra races in Britain - in a new course record of 95 hours, knocking over 15 hours off the old record.
