In this episode, Chris takes a look at the Presidio Golf Course in San Francisco and discusses two holes that are points of criticism on the back 9. After reading Tom Doaks, The Anatomy of a Golf Course, he was able to break down the psychology behind holes 12 and 17 and see what designer Robert Wood Johnstone was intending to do. 

 

The Presidio Golf Course was designed in 1895, right at the beginning of what many golf historians (Doak included) would call the golden age of golf course architecture. By understand the psychology behind what these designers were intending to do, it allows for a greater appreciate of the holes that modern players deem "unfair".

Chris and Mike met in Colombia for the PGA Tour Latinoamerica stop in Medellin in 2016. Chris wanted to have Mike on the show to discuss the mindset behind going low, having fun in golf when its hard to, and balancing your game when your family is so involved in golf.

 

Mike is a fun loving dude who can absolutely play. He has multiple sub-64 rounds in Latinoamerica, a few of them being course records. It was really fun to pick his brain about what it takes to go low and the kinds of things he works on to make his playing career better in all definitions of the word. Through our discussion I found that balance is key, but balance in whatever way works best for you.

In this episode, Chris catches up with his good friend and first mentor in the golf world, Tom Isaak. Tom was Chris’ math teacher in high school and the two developed a golfing relationship early in Chris’ high school career. Throughout high school, Tom played an integral role in developing Chris’ game through course management.

 

Tom is currently still teaching at Saint Augustine High School in San Diego where he is also the head golf coach. He coaches a team with over 30 young players trying to get better. The two discuss Toms start in golf, his professional career, and how to help young players enjoy the game.
