More iconic Berserk moments in this chunk of chapters (after a long hiatus - sorry!), including the official - and miraculous! - return of Griffith to Midland…where he immediately claims military, royal, and religious supremacy thanks to Princess Charlotte, the Pontiff of the Holy See, and the confirmation that he is the prophesied “White Hawk” who will be the savior of the people of Midland. Roderick’s iconic boat makes its first real appearance as well, and Gus-Gus and our zerky crew will be seafaring for a good long while now, with Guts healing, Farnesse and Schierke going astral together, and Isidro getting hit in the balls by Azan. The Human Bullet chapter offers one of the most iconic scenes in the entirety of Berserk, with ol’ Guts himself riding Zodd whole hog for one sole purpose: to penetrate the ethereal body of dread Emperor Ganeshka. It’s awesome, and so is the eventual showdown between Griffith and Ganeshka after a surprise sneak attack on the Kushan by the brand new Band of the Hawk!

Daiba is just tryin’ to Thrive-a in these chapters, as he battles Guts and Serpico with the might of even more ancient Eastern Magic: namely water tornados, makaras, and a giant ethereal Kundalini snake that’s essentially a god. Schierke helps Guts to finally exist half in and half out of the Berserker Armor; but, as Daiba ask him: will he be able to use it to its fullest potential without the “power of madness” on his side? These chapters have some amazing action, with the team up between Guts, Schierke and Serpico at its peak. However, there IS a war raging on between the Kushan, Vritannis…and The Band of the Hawk, and by the end of our episode, a swarm of The Godhand’s apostles and dread emperor Ganeshka are battling it out for evil supremacy over Midland.

These chaps are action PACKED!!! (Chaps means “chapters” of course). These chapters focus largely on Schierke, Isidro, and their counterparts in the new Band of the Hawk: annoying psychic girl Sonia, and mildly annoying (and boring!) knight, Mule. The art is amazing, detailed and busy - just like the events of the plot AND the character development and world building at play. It’s a fun read, even if it all made our brains a little tired after trying to follow the billions of small panels and billions of instances of dialogue. Ultimately, Miura is introducing the cliche’d (for good reason) concept that both sides of any war feel as they they are doing things for the betterment of the world; or, at least, their leader is on their behalf. Plus, Schierke unlocks a new DLC skin: “scullery maid.”
