My guest is Mike Murungi, a trained lawyer, head of Policy for Eastern Africa at Google. We are talking about early childhood education and how this impacts the human resource development of a country. During Covid-19, Mike became radicalised in how he approaches early childhood care and education to his children. He talks about how our education system is obsessed with the future and is time-bound. It also is very passive as children are just supposed to sit and not question anything. He believes we need to empower children to know and to ask questions. This has led him to homeschooling. He believes that the best education is one where the children interact with the environment and have the power of choice.

My guest is Zambian-born environmentalist Dr Musonda Mumba. Her environmental career – spans over 20 years. She has been at UNEP for 10 years and was  the head of the agency’s Terrestrial Ecosystems Team until Feb this year when she moved to the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP as Director of the Rome Centre for Sustainable Development. Dr Musonda Mumba is the founder of Network of African Women Environmentalists (NAWE). She is part of the WE Three Queens on YouTube and Listening to Earth Group. She is passionate about this planet we inhabit.

In this episode we talk about our connectivity to nature through language and how words talk about how we are connected to the space around us. Musonda reminds us about the importance of being deliberate about teaching our children our African languages and our culture and makes an appeal about being intentional about not assimilating ourselves. She sums the three things that affect all of us: how we live, how we eat and how we work. Her hope is that we will become more reflective about we connect to nature….

We continue with our conversation with Mwihaki Muraguri, founder of Paukwa House Ltd., a story-house dedicated to showcasing and sharing positive stories from Africa. This conversation was after our interview but listening to Mwihaki talk about the why of her raison d’être made me want to share this bit of our conversation. So what is your why? What drives you?

We talk about education and socialisation and Mwihaki reminds parents that their role is to help their children understand their purpose and figure it out….  Your child is the pilot and you, the parent, are just a co-pilot.  We also talk about the role of propaganda...to make our children feel this is the best country to be in. Most of all propaganda that would remind them that being Kenyan is more important than tribe!
