What if the way we think we’re helping… is actually causing harm?

In the second episode of August on No Me Callo / I Won’t Stay Quiet, Jessica Lomelin dives headfirst into an uncomfortable conversation:

Are we really helping people… or are we trying to turn them into who WE think they should be?

Because helping sounds good.
It sounds noble.
It sounds right.

But… what happens when helping becomes controlling?

When we stop listening because we think we know better?
When we make decisions for someone “for their own good”?
When our good intentions end up taking something away from another person that belongs to them: their voice, their autonomy, and their power to decide?

🛑 We don’t always need to rescue.

Sometimes we need to sit down.
Listen.
Ask questions.
Accept that we don’t have all the answers.
And have the humility to allow someone else to decide what a better life looks like FOR THEM.

In this episode, Jessica explores the difference between rescuing and accompanying, while challenging some of the ideas we’ve normalized about what it means to “help.”

Drawing from her experience in social work and working alongside survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence, she explores autonomy, power, privilege, humility, and responsibility.

Because there is a truth that can be difficult to accept:

We are not the protagonists of someone else’s story.

We are not here to write their ending.
We are not here to make their decisions.
We are not here to turn them into the version of themselves we believe they should be.

We are here to walk beside them.

Y tener la humildad de permitir que otra persona decida qué significa una vida mejor para ELLA o EL.

En este episodio, Jessica explora la diferencia entre rescatar y acompañar, y cuestiona algunas de las ideas más normalizadas sobre lo que significa “ayudar”.

Desde su experiencia en el trabajo social y acompañando a sobrevivientes de tráfico humano y violencia doméstica, habla sobre autonomía, poder, privilegio, humildad y responsabilidad.

In the first episode of August on No Me Callo / I Won’t Stay Quiet, Jessica Lomelin begins a new series with one of the most uncomfortable, but necessary conversations: “Good People Can Cause Harm.”

Can we acknowledge the harm someone caused without denying that they were also a good person?

In this episode, Jessica explores the reality that human beings are not simply good or bad.

They are complex.

We talk about parents who loved their children and still left wounds. People with good intentions who caused pain. Our own ways of hurting others without realizing it. And the difficult reality of accepting that love and hurt can exist in the same story.

Jessica also shares personal reflections about being a direct person, having high expectations, and how our own experiences can shape the way we connect with others.

Drawing from her experience working with survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence, Jessica discusses the importance of moving away from seeing human stories in black and white.

Because understanding someone’s complexity does not mean excusing the harm they caused.

And having compassion does not mean abandoning our boundaries.

The question of this episode is:

What if we stopped asking, “Was this person a good person?” and started asking, “How did their actions impact my life?”

🎙️ JULY SERIES — Everything No One Tells You About Growing Up

In July's Episode 4 of No Me Callo / I Won’t Stay Quiet, Jessica Lomelin closes the series “Everything No One Tells You About Growing Up” with a deeply personal conversation about something many of us need to hear: giving yourself permission to change your mind about who you are.

In this episode, Jessica explores the pressure of remaining the same person forever. The version of ourselves that promised certain things at 18. The life we imagined we would have by 30. The dreams that once defined us but no longer reflect who we are today.

Throughout the episode, Jessica reflects on how difficult it can be to accept that growing up also means saying goodbye to versions of ourselves. She talks about the grief of leaving a career you loved, starting over, losing people who promised they would stay, and discovering that life doesn't always look the way we imagined it would.

She also shares honest conversations about the guilt of changing. The guilt of setting boundaries. The guilt of leaving relationships, friendships, and places we once called home. And the reality of understanding that we did not come into this world to save everyone we came here to live our own lives.

Jessica also talks about reinventing herself at 29. About being the daughter of Mexican immigrants, working landscaping with her father, building a career, creating a podcast, traveling alone for work. And yet, still feeling, at times, like a little girl trying to figure out how to be an adult.

Throughout the episode, one question remains:

Who would you be if you stopped trying to be the person you promised you would become?

And maybe the answer is simpler than we think.

Maybe we were never lost.

Maybe we were simply changing.

Because perhaps the greatest act of self-love is not finding yourself.

In Episode 3 of July on No Me Callo / I Won’t Stay Quiet, Jessica Lomelin continues the series “Everything No One Tells You About Growing Up” with a deeply honest conversation about one of the most unexpected parts of becoming an adult, the loneliness that comes with growing up.In this episode, Jessica explores the moments when growing up doesn’t feel like the achievement we imagined it would be. Instead of clarity and confidence, adulthood can sometimes bring uncertainty, change, and the realization that we are constantly becoming someone new. She reflects on how strange it can feel to look back at old versions of yourself and wonder when everything changed.

Throughout the episode, Jessica talks about the quiet grief that comes with growing up, grieving friendships that fade without conflict, relationships that were meaningful but did not last, dreams that no longer fit, and versions of ourselves that we had to leave behind. She explores the complicated reality of missing people who are still alive and mourning chapters of our lives that ended without a clear goodbye.
