Beth Kane and her Buddy Ryan are hanging out at a record store when an alien signal interrupts daily life. Earth’s pop radio is terrible, and the aliens demand the Earthlings shut it down, or the blue planet will be blown to smithereens. The government decides the alien signal might be a hoax and taking any action would be too risky for the economy. Kane steals a spaceship named Epimetheus staffed by a juvenile AI named Bobby and together they escape in the nick of time.

Running low on oxygen, and desperate for something to listen to, Kane risks her life in an attempt to retrieve the Golden Record of Earth Sounds blasted into space by NASA in the 1970s.

Alien dictator Pony Golden hosts a concert of Earth pop to celebrate his rule. Kane tries to sabotage the show, but it is hard to rebel against an alien who also happens to be a huge fan. Just when Kane wonders what the point of it all is, she meets an old friend from Earth who helps her to remember why she keeps going.
