No Simple Road

Heads Talking is back from a little break this week feeling renewed, refreshed, and a bunch of other 're' words. Aaron, Mel, & Apple are happily broadcasting once again from The Porch after being relegated inside for the winter and get into a discussion about how they are feeling about NSR, the direction of the podcast, and how they personally are feeling at this stage of the game. This is us, getting back to our roots of the show, finding our footing, and letting the NSR Family know where our heads are at (pun intended.

No Simple Road is proud to have the legendary, one and only, Dave School as our guest this week! Dave is the bass player and founding member of Widespread Panic, record producer, songwriter, journalist, and just one hell of a kind human being! In the midst of all that's going on Dave spends some time with the No Simple Road crew talking about his roots, the magic of Col. Bruce Hampton, being home to see his peaches ripen, growing up in The South and how that shaped his world view, how discomfort provides a great space to learn, and so much more!! This is one of those moments in time that will remain a snapshot of where we all are right now and will continue to evolve and change with us when we go back and listen.

Billy Strings has been hailed as the future of bluegrass, transcending tradition and genre with his high velocity, flat-picking guitar technique and intense, confessional songwriting and he's here to spend some time with No Simple Road! This conversation is a lot like a river, flowing easily and at times taking us to unexpected places. Billy talks about losing friends to substance abuse and how that made him form an otherworldly work ethic, being raised around Bluegrass music and how that just seemed so cool, his relationship with his Dad and how that has informed the person he is today, and tells us what his perfect day looks like!

Mark Levy from Circles Around The Sun joins No Simple Road this week! Once in a while a conversation happens that just feels like folks need to hear it. Obviously we want everyone to hear all of our episodes but this one in particular is important for all of us to not just listen to but let absorb into your minds. We talk about seeing the quarantine from another perspective, cultivating gratitude for the little things, finding joy in abandoning hope, how he's coping with going from being on the road to being at home, and a ton more!

This week on No Simple Road we get cheesy with our brothers The Higgs. The guys join us to talk about the release of their new live album 'Rose Will Fall Mixtape' and we do something a little different! Instead of a straight ahead interview we take a journey inside the minds of John, Jessie, Garrett, and David to find out what makes them tick with some oddball questions they weren't expecting!

We're with Heads Talking this week! We'd just finished up talking to The Higgs for an episode coming soon and got into a great conversation about the unseen hand of the universe and how it moves important people into our lives, the importance of paying attention and mindfullness in what all things, how you may never know your voice was heard even if it was, and the impact of being a Brother to someone.

This week on No Simple Road we are stoked to bring you Hillary Grace from Fretland! Fretland just released their debut album on May 22nd and we catch up with Hillary to talk about creating from pain, having mental space to create beauty, living somewhere incredibly amazing, what it was like to finally make their first full length album, finding family in your friends, and a whole lot more!

While still getting footing on their newest plateau, Fretland has lots to enjoy in the view behind them. The band corralled two sonic stalwarts for their first full length record, including engineer Nich Wilbur (Angel Olsen, Black Belt Eagle Scout) and Seattle-area sage Trevor Spencer (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes), who mixed the record. The band, rife with energy and momentum, has already created one of those strong foundations that allows for a long story to unfold in great detail and with much revelation.
