As a society, we treat talking about our salaries & income like bringing up Voldemort: they shall not be named. There's no denying that money is an intensely personal subject and is more than what's in your pocket. It's tied to power, security, access to things like healthcare, your sense of self-worth, and beyond.
But, if we never talk about it, it just gets bigger and scarier in our heads, like a monster in a closet.
So is there a "right" way to talk about how much money you make?
Today, we're talking about how to talk about money. We get into the differences between discussions with coworkers and family & friends, why it's okay to be proud (and how to steer clear of bragging), and how to balance envy with feeling excited for someone's success.
We also chat about "benevolent benefactor syndrome", separating your self-worth from your income and why money isn't a judge of character, how talking about money can help us set expectations, and why *asking* someone if they're comfortable speaking about their pay is probably the best solution.
