On this week’s show my guest and I talk about social media and how his organization uses it to serve members. I have been waiting to focus on this topic until these different tools became more solid and defined, and smaller, local nonprofits were using them well.

My guest this week is Chris Oien of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of the Twin Cities (that’s Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota). Its mission is to provide and promote opportunities for the development of young nonprofit professionals. YNPN-Twin Cities is less than 10 years old and has 300 members and a distribution list of around 1000 professionals in their 20s and 30s. Chris Oien has worked in the nonprofit sector for eight years and he’s a volunteer board member of the local chapter of YNPN. He works for the Minnesota Council on Foundations where he the web communications associate.

Chris was kind enough to describe for me how YNPN-Twin Cities weaves together the website and blog with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and e-newsletters. The volunteer board members have been very smart about promoting the organization and taking on new social media channels as they build capacity.
