Nooks and Crannies

Welcome to Episode 40 of Nooks and Crannies!

The Secret Sauce of Wilhelm Reich with Over-Under Pod Recs to Combat Boredom

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Welcome Back folks, we got a banger of an episode for you today!

We kick things off with a wee bit of a check in, seeing how boredom is effecting our lived experience and all that noise. (6:46) Over-Under-or-Properly Rated: Canadian Hip Hop with special guest appearances by The Rascalz (Northern Touch) and Snow-Informer!

(9:14) Wanna hear about a Whacky Genius? Wonder why your orgone meter is too low and want to know how and why this is having an effect on the weather? Well folks, step up and into the wonderful world of Wilhelm Reich; the sex-obsessed 1920s psych-analyst from Austria, who was also a commie and was eventually booted from Norway for his “extreme” methodologies and found himself in the land of the Free *to practice pseudoscience, America. Find out what that box was used for and the sick and twisted things Matty plans to do to it; but before that, watch this music video from Kate Bush: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pllRW9wETzw

(40:52) If you are like Evan and I, you are probably getting pretty bored of Netflix et al, and you have also noticed that podcasting is down 30% both in listenership and in episodes being released…what better time to recommend a bunch of pods?!

These 4 worthy inclusions all have that je na sais quoi, or as Wilhelm might phrase it: They exude Orgone and we don’t know why?

Spittin Chiclets (I want to replace R.A.!), Mouse and Weens (big fans of ours! for some reason), Florida Men on Florida Man (I want to be their friends, is that weird?) and a Bonus Shout to: I Shake my Head with Lisa and Sam!

FIXED 39 - Psychosomatic Covidian Observations or How we Learned to Love Self-Isolation

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Howdy folks, just heard Waffle House is closing all locations in the South, I am very sorry to hear about your loss..things should return to normal by Easter tho..right??

This one is a little looser, it’s two friends discussing the nuances of this cray cray world we have found ourselves thrust into; we are talking self isolation, how Evan suddenly learned how to cook, Supply Chain Management and hoarding, the reaction of the public (ethnographic observations) and some ranting rhetoric about the political dimensionalities.

This is a COVID self assessment that was developed by the Province of BC, I think anyone who is concerned about themselves or others should take it and share it widely. It’s a pretty solid and fast option, helps with the Psychosomatic COVID that Matt acquired for a few hours! https://bc.thrive.health/

Welcome to Episode 38 of Nooks and Crannies!

38 – Reduxing Heather from NJRR: Intersectional Women and Weed while 2nd Amendment Nazi’s are Screwing up the Primaries, in Documentary Form

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

(1:40) Weed Women and Wellness: When we left off with Heather the first time, she was about to host the amazing sounding Weed Women and Wellness event at a women’s health center in Cherry Hill NJ https://thewomenscenters.com/cherryhillwomenscenter/

It of course went amazing and in true indie pod fashion, she got a couple podcast episodes out of it! *Linked Below

(26:06) 2nd Amendment and Nazi’s: Based off an amazing article written by the poly-mathematically gifted Heather, we get into how Nazi’s in America have co-opted the beautiful US Sanctuary City provision and twisted it to serve their own purposes.

(36:12) Antifa and Antifa Canada: We both proudly support ANTIFA, obviously, but what Matty has a hard time with is this shit right here: https://nypost.com/2019/10/01/video-shows-antifa-group-block-elderly-couples-path-yell-nazi-scum/

Maybe its cuz I am a “Polite Canadian” or maybe its because I understand how even one story like that can undermine a cause..so ANTIFA Canada, keep your stick on the ice and head on a swivel cuz that shit right there is all the right wing lame-stream press needs to “prove” the “silliness” of the cause. Eh!

(41:00) 3rd Parties and US Democratic Primaries: We cover vote shaming, bit on red baiting, and who Heather is planning on supporting: SPOILER, it’s the Green Party (https://www.gp.org/)!

(53:52) Easter Egg from Ms Vi: Don’t Worry folks, about a thing, cuz every little thing is gonna be alright!

(54:22) The Journey to Me (doc): Heather from New Jersey Revolution Radio, who writes, photographs, educates, podcasts, organizes and advocates, is about to add Documentary Filmmaker to already impressive Curriculum Vital. Watch the trailer after you check your bank account to see how many loonies and hopefully toonies you can throw in the direction of this extremely worthwhile and very fascinating film about LGBTQ rights as well as in general “Finding your Authentic Self”!

Emergency Minisode of Nooks and Crannies!

EM: 19 Flavors of COVID with Heather from NJRR

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Welcome folks to a sneaky little Emergency Minisode that I pulled from Round 2 with Heather *Nooks and Crannies’ Resident Communist, from New Jersey Revolution Radio and Wine Women and Revolution. We were talking about 2nd amendment gun rights and its relation to Nazi’s and then in true Nooks and Crannies fashion, Heather throws a left hand curve ball at ol Matty and booya, we are talking about the COVID-19/Corona Virus, and in further true N&C fashion, Matty leads off the chin wag with some Americana-Bashing which he sustains throughout the little segment.

Enjoy, Next full one will be about Zombies *and weirdly we did not make any connections to Corona Virus even though it was recorded in Feb. How times have changed rapidly eh?

Welcome to Episode 37 of Nooks and Crannies!

Cuban Corona Viruses flowing out of Libertarian Fountainheads

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Welcome back Evan, missed you buddy!

Evan kicks things off by regaling us with his Adventures in Cuba, and how he brought an unexpected souvenir back in his belly (no it was not a drug filled condom, get your head out of the gutter weirdo!). Instead he recounts how truly awful Canadian tourists can be, how all he was able to purchase was Hollandia beer and state sponsored pasta *weirdly just before hitting record he spilled a full box of dried pasta on the floor, Evan consumes an inordinate amount of Pasta folks, I might need to do another culinary segment for the guy…Sounds like it was a fascinating experience for Evan to see a real live Communist country!

https://nooksandcrannies.podbean.com/e/28-halloween-spectacular-self-immolating-sens-fans-floppy-disked-icq-chatting-making-bread-with-cod-baskets/

(16:48) For Gosh Knows eh, what reason Evan subjected himself to the Critically Lambasted (actually got a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes) Atlas Shrugged film trilogy!

From poorly acted performances, sudden changes in roles, how unlikeable everyone was and the overall poor filmmaking throughout, Folks if you love badly made movies that are also simultaneously heavy handed with its political bias, Atlas Shrugged might be your new favorite Unwatchables!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_Shrugged_(film_series)

(29:48) Corona/COVID19

We end on a serious and frightening note, the COVID 19 segment based on the AMAZINGLY Terrifying episode from On The Media called Black Swans. On this episode they had Journalist Laurie Garret who is knowledgeable and experienced in covering all things Public Health and in this episode, focused in on the response by the US and concerns she has going forward. This might be one to listen to first then return to ours, but, you are the boss of you and I am not going to tell you what to do! But please, wash your hands!!

In our segment, we focus in on the political-economic-cultural landscape that is present in various countries, how this will effect the spread and response to this epidemic, the real role that the markets and supply chain management plays (Just in Time production methods) and the fragility of our economies. Matty has a background in Medical Anth but very little in epidemiology or Public Health studies, so he cobbles together what he knows and then we shifted into our standard anti-racism political economic inspired anthropological analysis’.

Anywhozydoozy, this one is a Doozy! Aren’t we Lucky? (or screwed!?)

EMERGENCY Episode of Nooks and Crannies!

Super Tuesday, Super Delegates, Oh My!

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Quick notes on this Emergency Minisode; Pete Buttigieg

Welcome to Nooks and Crannies!

Minisode: Historical Analysis of Why Matty is Afraid of Zombies with Chris and Paul

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Welcome to a very disturbing minisode of Nooks and Crannies!

Our very own Movie Savant Paaa_uu_llL Combs reluctantly agreed to fulfill his contract and return for another round with ol Matty, and joining both of us is Chris, the Host of everyone’s favorite Video Game-Comic Book podcast Play Comics Podcast. I have been on his show twice, both times I attempted a hostile takeover, so this is Chris’ payback it seems (links to those below).

After shitting on the Fine State of Georgia and some random Magic the Gathering chatting for the benefit of Frequent Mention: DC, we get into why Chris and Paul find Zombies fascinating and the role that Steven King played in this.

Chris brought an article from Vox (Link) that covers the early history, key themes and notable (innovative) examples from film and pop culture through the 20th century (link again below). Matt highlights the existential anxieties and racialized stereotypes associated with Voodooism and Zombies, including Paul’s Purge-esque fantasies about settling some grievances.

Bringing it back to the early history of Voodoo in Haiti and how it relates to their Slave-Led Revolution; the fella’s dig into the political themes including Suspicion, fear of the Other, racialized notions, “primitiveness” v civilizational ‘advancement’ and the unique ideological Assimilation (Paul makes a great point here) between indigenous religion and US Catholic Missionaries (1915), native cultures by their colonial overlords, is eerily similar symbolically to the assimilation we see in the onrushing Zombie Hoard!!

The rest of the Episode (movies, zombies in pop culture and teasing Chris) will be out Next week as Episode 37.

Keep it Spooky folks, watch your brains!

Welcome to Episode 36 of Nooks and Crannies!

Stranger Danger Real-Estate Markets or Funky-Town Money Laundering

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Welcome back to Canada Evan who just spent 10 days in Cuba! His gastrointestinal track is proof positive that he had a “blast” evidently he still is…Gross.

(3:00) We got yet another Spotify Playlist, for Evan’s ridicule. Violet’s Funky Town; old-school funk and disco era tunes that make Vi wiggle. Matt also discovers Evan’s Achilles Heel to counter-act his critiques: Heavy Unwarranted Praise!

(9:03) Might have been the single malt; we cut a quick little Meta Pod Babble Segment about Wholistic Pod-Intentionality, or some shit…

(12:26) This is a big ol Political Segment about the ongoing issue(s) of Money Laundering in BC’s Casino’s and Canada’s Real-Estate market. This is a story that E and M both know quite a bit about, so we give solid background and provide our own real life experiences witnessing the skyrocketing costs of housing alongside the Stagnation of Real Income levels. I don’t know what got up my ass on this one folks, but, Mamoo grows an impressive beard, his hair gets a little zany and boy oh boy his Marxist vanguard waves ferociously!

(27:51): We are resurrecting the Podcast Recommendation Section plagiarized from Matty’s Corner on the Podstuff Podcast. We start with the good Canadian Kids; Skip and Josh who have a solid a-political(ish) pod about professional and NCAA sports, if you are looking for coverage and solid analysis on all things players, scores, owners, transactions and interesting tidbits on the Media. Friends of our show too!

The Edge of Sports podcast is intensely political and hosted by the Wokest sports podcaster: Dave Zarin. If you are looking for progressive athletic coverage that goes way beyond the headlines, digging into the Nooks and Crannies of sports politics, check out the Edge of Sports podcast!

Burn it All Down is like EoS but from a feminist and female-centric perspective. Hosted by four outstandingly brilliant co-hosts one of which is in Canada, eh! All the episodes and topics focus on female athletes and their sports (pro and amateur) and due to the extreme bias in the mainstream press you will surely hear dozens of new things on each listen. It’s a segmented show, love the Burn Pile btw, and the guests they have are very thought-provoking. One of the best new pod discoveries of my last 6 months! Keep up the fine work!!

Last but not least; Evan brings in Why Theory about psycho-analytic theory and its applications *theory is the perspectives used and applied to data to help analysis, perspective basically. Anywho, Evan comes out of the Freudian Closet on this one, weird little psycho-analyzer, whereas Matty is of course a Jungian. Couple of Pedantic dillwads eh?

 (34:31) We cap things off with another 90s Memories from Old Man Matty’s Dimming Mind, this edition we have the really dark and depressing: STRANGER DANGER! Hear about Matt’s bearspray and personal auditory alert device, how my inability to go “downtown” until I was 21 shaped my entire personality, note how Evan notes this, hear about BC’s propensity to produce serial killers, some really sad conversations, how Evan met his first Anthropologist in Winnipeg, how 8y.o. Mamoo sidestepped the Jerk Off Specialist on his way to Mac’s; and we cap things with a broad discussion (future episode for sure) about True Crime as a pod genre and our puzzlement over its continuous popularity.

**I will mention this in the episode too, sorry for the giggles, that was nervous laughter on Matt’s part, true-crime and the cases makes me sad and nervous, really uncomfortable, its why I was trying desperately to somewhat make light of experiences we had…and why this will be our last TC segment ever! Others that do these kinds of shows do so properly**

Talks to You All soon, aren’t I lucky??

Next Episode: A deep dive on Zombie’s with our very own Cinematic Expert

Welcome to Episode 35 of Nooks and Crannies

Degenerate Disks, Tails of Gaslighting Women in Medicine and Amerikan Imperialism in El Salvador, with Kelly Nerdzilla Mendenhall

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Welcome to a very rangy episode of Nooks and Crannies, with longtime in the making and immediate recurring guest, Kelly Nerdzilla Mendenhall!!!

Matty kicks this wild ride off with a big ‘Ol FLUB that turned out to be an inadvertent (but worthy!) endorsement of The Cult of Domesticity (pod) whilst attempting to plug Kelly’s pod A Non-Mom Happy Hour!

Then we get down to business, (2:05) Kelly takes us through her last 3 years which revolved around numerous spinal surgeries and therapeutic recoveries. If anyone out there has spinal issues or past physical trauma(s) that may have contributed to current ailments, this is an account to dive into or share with others, might help…(9:35) Kelly and Matt dig into some of the numerous causal factors that triggered the onset of her conditions, including the possible existence of her tail! Side Note: Evan might also have a tail, was chatting with him the other night about this in relation to Kelly’s. Anywhozydoozy..

(15:20) Gaslighting of Women in Medical Encounters: Kelly is soon to publish a follow up to her autobiographical memoir Skin in the Game; the stories my tattoos tell, all about the medicalized Gaslighting of Women within Medical Encounters. Kelly provides us with an account that was eerily similar to the one I heard on Heather’s episode of Wine Women and Revolution, right down to the impact of finding an African American Female Neurologist (seriously) who “Finally Believed Her”. Once Kelly publicized her account on her pod and blog, I imagine, she was flooded with responses from other women with similar narratives, so much so that it lead to the writing (ongoing) of her second book all about this crucial and only recently discussed patriarchical and racialized bias in Medicine.

(41:25) After a few hilarious “Bev” stories and further accounts of Kelly’s savagery, we get into some of the wider themes of her next book, including the intersectionalization of medicalized embodied bias through clinical praxis! You will have to listen to learn what I mean by that overly complex psudo-academic phrase.

(45:25) Followed by a sudden and refreshing further Left-Hand Turn, Kelly regales us with tails of American Imperialism in El Salvador! We hit the hour mark soon after, and I wanted to cap it there..but stay tuned for Part 2 of the Nerdzilla Experience and beyond!

Talks to ya’all soon and Aren’t I Lucky!

Welcome to Episode 34 of Nooks and Crannies!

4 Fingers of Fermi Paradox or Not Alone in Our Strange Skies

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

What happens when you combine 6 fingers of Scotch and Evan’s Existential Despair that was remedied by Carl Sagan? You gets this episode on the Fermi Paradox! *whether or not there is life in the galaxy.

Matty’s less-frequent-than-I-would-like-mushroom-trips, came in handy on this one let me tell ya..I was even able to slip in not 1 but 3 podcast recommendations on this one: Our Strange Skies, Not Alone and The Mad Scientist *I can still hear Chris yelling into his Airpods!

This is an Evan Episode; he starts us off with some mind bending statistics that quite literally tore my partial lobe’s in 4! In shocking clarity for a Marxist, Evan takes us through the nuanced features of the proposition:

1. The Great Filter: That cataclysmic events occur that wipe out civilizations and whole evolutionary stages, if this is the case..maybe some similar planet to ours was depopulated at a certain stages (like ours was) halting and restarting that planets’ evolution! Then we either need these restarts or ours is such a unique example that it is statistically implausible to reoccur!

2. Kardashev Scale: Outlines the stages or techno-civilizational development around the ability to harness energy from the Planet, Sun, Solar System and Galaxy. This is one that broke Evan’s noggin, while I could not get the Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner visual out of my already broken mind. That Sucked! ;-) sorry

3. The Dark Forest: Based on Hugo Winning trilogy (Remembrance of Earth’s Past) by Chinese Sci-Fi author Lui Cixin the DF theory suggests that us humans can never be sure of Alien’s true intentions due to the extreme distances and divergences in intentionality and cultural priorities.

4. The Problem with the Speed of Light: Basically, due to the upper limits of the speed of light, we can never hope to reach distant galaxies. How then can they reach us?? Well ol Matty just flings out a few pop-physics terms and provides an efficient and plausible work around!

We end things with an overview and recap. This one was an unexpected treat, hope it helps to chase away those Winter Blues/Complex Depression! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft9sJyS2wd0)

Be Well, Talk to Yas’all Soon and Aren’t I lucky :-)
