Welcome to Nooks and Crannies! This is Part 2 of a fascinating conversation that Matty was privileged to have with “The Good Doctor” Dr. Woolf (PhD. Spiritual Psych), if you missed it, here is Part 1 where Doc describes his “Big 3” concussions and how it has likely impacted his entire life:

Turns out that no matter what the over-wrought highly alienating academic term, concept or name drop that Mamoo flings his way, Dr. Woolf is able to one-up my name drop and provide a more thoughtful analysis! So lets talk dialectical phenomenological existentialism, why the eff not eh?

After scrutinizing the Mind-Body dialectic, Dr. Woolf asks Matty to describe his Ontological orientation towards the world as it relates to TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries) and whether or not I have a grounding in faith *this guy is the best folks, seriously, might have found Evan’s replacement ;-)

After pontificating on myself for a bit, we cover both of our “Journey’s of Self-Discovery” when it comes to concussions; for Matt it was seeing the researchers from Boston University’s Concussion Legacy Foundation on Larry King Live back in 2008, Dr. Woolf recently enrolled as well, for him it was seeing his son, unfortunately, being involved in a MVA and the resulting high-level of care he received (2019) which compelled the Good Doc on his own existential journey of self discovery through mutual learning with his son and his health care professionals who practiced a huge amount of empathy *which is the “cultural change” in medicine that has happened since Boston U started their research ‘08

****Trigger Warning (21:40) Suicidal Thoughts and Actions**** We get into the Big S here, it’s a common complaint of TBI survivors that suicidal thoughts and notions, or in some cases acts of self-harm and attempts, are quite common. We discuss Dr. Woolf’s life-long struggles here for about 4 MINs.

We also discuss the relation between brain damage and pharmaceutical side-effects, especially SSRI’s *Just want to note, they don’t work for me but if you are in need of acute or long-term mental health pharmaceutical intervention, please explore this option. And to cap things off, we knee cap Mormonism a bit, and especially how it impacted his understanding of himself and the wider world around him.

Ya..we covered a lot of ground, met the guy 4 days before on FB, talked for 3 times longer than I thought and, it was so intensely thought provoking that I knew halfway through that he will be a repeat guest!

Howdy folks, in light of the need for mindless silly content that is also distracting and at times nostalgic, this might be the episode for you..But hey, I am not trying to tell you how to live your life or nothing, we are just trying to help out..geeze

Whatever, this one is all about The Vancouver Canucks and Ottawa Senators through the eyes of a Young Evan (I still don’t really know how old the guy is..) and a much younger and still more attractive Matty. Sound Drops all over the place folks, I had a lot of fun using them to tease and poke fun at my co-host.

Side Note: If you ever wanted to have a playful debate in a pub with a Canadian that has the potential to devolve into a haymaker-fest out in the parking lot outside of Moose Jaw Sask or Red Deer Alberta, this episode is essentially a blueprint to do just that!

We begin by discussing a game Chris has hardly played, yet is the most popular Zombie video game of all time and has spawned the most sequels, Resident Evil! After we make fun of the guy for this for a bit, we jump over to a movie that is firmly in Matty’s top 7 of all time: 28 Days Later.  

We totally glossed over Sean of the Dead, I heard it was great and funny, I only got 11 mins in and once I saw the first zombie (some girl-child) I was all like: Nope, Done, I’m out..and that was in front of Melly. What I am saying folks, I don’t like zombies…but I do L.O.V.E. Shoehorning in overly complicated academic terminology as a pathetic way for me to feel better than myself, at the expense of friends of course…Existentialism is the study of existence or consciousness (lived experience), Phenomenology is the study of perception and how that impacts experience. I am such a dick eh?

Welcome to a reflexively fascinating episode of Nooks and Crannies

Matty had the privilege of chatting with Dr. Woolf (PhD Spiritual Psych, Musician, Father, super intelligent, oh ya, he has also sustained many Concussions! Capt. Concussion and Admiral Noggin Knock go down a reflexive journey recounting his concussions, how the medical field did or more often than not, did not recognize or validate his brain injuries, why its important to not get smoked in the face with a bow-staff whilst on Acid, how to properly camp in Mexico and why catching a 90lb speaker with your face is the wrong approach!

At times funny, mostly morbidly fascinating, and throughout it was thought provoking, honest and revealing. Oh, this is part 1 of 2 and we will be having Dr. Woolf on again and again, wait till you hear his super professional sounding Radio Voice!

Meaty Musical Marinades, or How/Why Matt Grew a Foot in 3 Months!?

Welcome to a very eclectic episode of Nooks and Crannies!

We were supposed to kick things off with three Spotify playlists:

Brain Expansion: Classical, Post-Concussed, and Apocalyptic…

But instead Mamoo takes Evan along for a crazy Ivan (abrupt and unexpected left-hand turn, it’s a submarine move Matty picked up from Hunt for the Red October), and talked about our highschool dayz; including the East Coast-Westside, is the best side, Rap Battles of the mid 90s and why Evan was more pretentious than that old man hat got at Tip Top and the fact that he had to audition for his Art’s High School, would lead you to believe.

Then we get into the music, we start with Brain Expansion: Classical, where Evan calls Vi a “Basic White Girl” then we move into Matty’s Post-Concussed playlist which actually for the first time in our friendship, impressed Evan with my surprisingly relevant and artistically contemporary choices (spoiler: I plagiarized the shit out of another playlist! #winning). We cap this slap-happy segment off with my Apocalyptic playlist, which I knocked together in less than 15 mins with vi at breakfast as I was slowly loosing my mind mannnnnnnn….

Zombie Movies: Racialized Others and Why they justifiably want to Eat our Brains!

(Originally Recorded at the end of Feb; we somehow did not mention the “Corona Virus” in relation to Zombies, speaks to how quickly things changed eh? Glad we did not make these comparisons actually…)

We kick things off with a deepish dive on Bella Lugosi’s White Zombie (no not Rob Zombie!) a film from 1932 that sort of but not really defined the whole genre. This film defiantly reinforced the racialized tropes associated with Zombies (i.e. The Primative Dangerous Other, whom need to be contained and controlled) as does gendered tropes (women need saving), while at the same time being a masterpiece from Lugosi, the grandpappy of Horror…1/5 Stars

Next up is the 50’s Atomic Aged Zombies, especially the strip: Corpses, Coast to Coast! (http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/2008/01/corpses-coast-to-coast.html) – Ya, I screwed up the title in the recording! A atomic aged comic that was pre “code” era, which means its pretty gory and great. It also is a pure embodiment of the political and  international relational fears and anxieties of the dawn of the Cold War.

We finish up this portion with the justifiably famous and groundbreaking: Night of the Living Dead (date).
