Howdy and welcome today’s performance of the Vault of Silliness starring Norm Nathan. Episode 143 presents a DBG from June 29th, 1995. This week the Vault has exposed a DBG relic from June 12th, 1991. It’s a good one and I’ve titled it:
Out and About with Umlauts.
Norm begins by giving us a very interesting temperature and then it’s on to a classic traffic network sounder and Jack Harte with all the wall washing, bulb changing, ceiling repairs and work crews you can handle.
Then we get the driest possible show open for Bob Raleigh (as Norm was filling in that night).
Players:
Irene in CT
Judy from Needham
Harry Platcow and Jack Wertheimer
I’m on the phone
Jack Harte
And Mike Epstein producing and playing in studio
Bdays:
George Bush
Jim Nabors
Chick Correa
Vic Damone
David Rockefeller
Ally Sheedy
Uta Hagen
Other things that ‘punctuated’ the show:
We learn that the desks are being locked in sales dept so Norm can’t steal stuff for prizes.
Jack Clark and Carl Yastrzemski wwere traffic reporters.
Feedback
Like Marilyn Guralnick, we have loose rules.
Getting you right where we want ya
Mosquitos in your ear

VERY interesting facts on the umlaut. You DO NOT want to miss that.
Fits of anger that alter the rules

I’m back after having my body ravaged by norovirus. That was a bit dramatic, but it wasn’t a whole lotta fun, that’s for sure.
And what a way to return with what I believe could very well be one of, if not the first appearance of the SMQ (simply known as The Musical Quiz) – May 29th, 1992.
Because of that I have titled it: The Debut Album
The opening track was a Kid Company promo, some lottery numbers and scores, then the Panel is introduced:

The Vault of Silliness has surprised us today with quite the find.
A 32-year-old cassette that sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Hailing from Friday, April 26th, 1991, we have Steve Martorano hosting and his guest is none other than Henny Youngman. He’s in studio and sounding fantastic. He was going to be appearing at Nick’s Comedy Stop in Randolph and Framingham. He also had a new book about to be published, “Take My Life, Please.”
Let’s call this one “A Henny Good Time.”
You will hear the whole hour, uninterrupted. News, traffic, and commercials. All of it.
I love how ‘clean’ the station sounds. No frills, no noisy sounders behind every update and voice.
Lots of topics are discussed:
Vaudeville
His recent commercials endeavors and a hit movie
He was going to be doing some dates with Milton Berle & Red Buttons that October
Dial-a-Joke
David Brudnoy calls in to tease his show that would feature William F Buckley as his guest. David uses a Normism quite nicely.
Diane Stern with the news
Jeff Brown w/Traffic
And Accuwx w/Alex Seznowski
They take a call from Grace who had listened to Henny on the Kate Smith Show way back when
Al Jolson, Frank Sinatra, George Burns and more legends are talked about.
SO many commercials:
College Financial Planning Services of New England
Steve commercial read for a book: Massachusetts by Nancy Zaroulis
Steve read: US Protective Alarms in Waltham
Peter Meade Promo
Safe, Dependable Oil Heat sponsored by the Qualified Fuel Oil Dealers of Massachusetts
Texaco and their System 3 Gasoline
Louise’s Homestyle Pasta Company
NewsCenter 5 and Chronicle promo
A promo for a WBZ News Special Report: The Excise Tax with Jacqueline Goddard
Richard Simmons for Scratch Save and Win at the Cambridgeside Galleria, Emerald Square, Liberty Tree and Arsenal Malls.
The Spirit of New England jingle
Steve does a movie ticket giveaway for a Sylvester Stallone movie, “Oscar.” Also, you’re entered to win a General Cinema Prize Package where the Grand Prize is a $50 gift certificate to the Hilltop Steakhouse, 2 free 6 month memberships to LA Fitness, a $40 gift certificate to Chili’s and 4 Stallone video cassettes.
NYNEX Mobile – what a plan!
The Club and Operation Lock-Up
United Van Lines with Stiller and Meara!
Sleeper Showcase Going Out of Business Sale
Steve commercial read for Lo-Jack! Prevent, Alert and Retrieve.
And we close with a classic top hour sounder then some news and traffic.
Ep 136, A Henny Good Time, fiddles its way to your ears…now.
