Mid-June, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors adopted a $1.78

billion budget for the next fiscal year. The new budget resulted in $14 million

in unfulfilled funding requests and cut nine county jobs of a staff of about

4,000. The county requested the state cover the property tax loss from the 2017

wildfires, but that backfill was unavailable from Sacramento this year. KRCB’s

Adia White talked with chair of the board of supervisors, David Rabbitt about

how the changes in the budget will affect Sonoma County residents.

This spring, there was strong support in the state legislature for senate bill 50. SB 50 would have rewritten zoning laws to allow for more housing to be built along transit lines and near job centers. But despite bipartisan support, the bill was delayed until at least 2020. San Francisco State Senator Scott Wiener authored the bill. He spoke with KRCB’s Steve Mencher about his next steps.

Hate crimes are on the rise across the nation and here in

the North Bay. In response, The Interfaith Council of Sonoma County started a

campaign to spread kindness. KRCB’s Adia White talked with council chair

Mohammad Jabbari and reverend Tara Steele to learn how faith-based groups are

working together to fight hate. Jabbari starts the interview by reading a poem.

For many who lost their homes in the North Bay fires, rental

vouchers provided by homeowner’s insurance policies are about to expire. 

As the two-year anniversary of the North Bay fires

approaches, those who lost their homes are racing to meet a deadline to finish

rebuilding. Representatives from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home

Safety hosted an event at the Santa Rosa Junior College last week. In

yesterday’s report, we shared their tips about hardening your home to lessen

the risk of wildfire. In today’s report, KRCB’s Adia White covers their advice

for home insurance policyholders.

Remember the story of the three little pigs? One fire expert

reenacted the tale to show homeowners which building material is the most fire

resistant.

As we head into summer and hot weather, homeowners are

looking for ways to protect their properties from wildfire. KRCB’s Adia White

attended an event at the Santa Rosa Junior College Training Center hosted by

the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. The highlight of the

event was a demonstration burn to showcase which building materials are the

most flammable.
