Our author concludes his argument for the superiority of the priesthood of Christ. It is a priesthood which is uninterrupted, unchanging, undefiled, and empowered by indestructible life. It is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him.

Returning to Hebrews 7, we are instructed that we have standing in the blessing of a greater Covenant than was offered at Sinai. This is because Jesus is both the Mediator of the Covenant, as well as its guarantor.

Our author, building upon the picture of Melchizedek, demonstrates that the Levitical priesthood (along with the Covenant which authorized it) was not God's final plan, but that it pointed to a greater and sufficient Covenant and mediator, Christ. It was always God's plan that Christ, and Him alone, would offer us a better hope!

Entering the 7th chapter of the Letter to the Hebrews, the author instructs his hearers on Melchizedek who points to Christ as a type.

Moving into this important sixth chapter of the Letter to the Hebrews, we begin to see how the concerns of chapter 5 lead into the warning of chapter 6. There is an immediate call to not lay again the foundation that was already laid. The teachings that these Hebrew Christians once received are not something to which they can return -as if they are sufficient in themselves-. Instead, they are a foundation that is meant to be built upon. Just as a bare foundation is incomplete, so too are these teachings if they do not lead to the finished work of Christ. To hold to an unfinished foundation is an affront to the call and revelation of God.

As we continue through Hebrews chapter 6, we see the author continue to speak of hopeful things. The believers who are receiving this letter need to focus less on their challenges and more on the certain hope that they have in Christ. He compares it to an anchor, sure and steady, which enters into the presence behind the veil. It is unshakable through all the storms of this world, because this "anchor hold behind the veil."

Continuing in the sixth chapter of Hebrews, we see that God has confirmed His promise with a oath. This oath is offered to the heirs of the promise that we might have strong consolation in His perfect Word...it is comfort for us in the day of challenge.

Today, we come to an important section of the text for both understanding the warning of the sixth chapter, as well as the larger Letter to the Hebrews. The author reminds the recipients that he has confidence of better things concerning them. Join us as we see how this note helps us to understand the nature of the warning just offered in the text.

Our Easter Sermon for April 17, 2022. We turn to the Revelation of Jesus Christ in order to see what was revealed to John as the glorious risen Lord appears to him. Jesus reminds John that the churches are in His sovereign hands and that persecution cannot stop God from accomplishing His eternal purposes. There is a reminder here that God is in control and that we can trust Him no matter how difficult the days may seem.

Concluding Hebrews 5, we return to the exhortation of this author to grow in our knowledge of the Word of righteousness- this we can do by desiring the solid food of the Word. Still, we should realize that the solid food is for those who are mature, meaning those -who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.- So, maturity is not simply a matter of learning, but of putting that knowledge to use in our practice. We are called to live in this way to the glory of God.
