DISCUSSION QUESTIONS //

1. Pastor Larry stated that the Pharisees and the Sadducees were bitter enemies and they're united by a common threat. Why do you think Jesus was considered a common threat and what do you think was their plan? (See. Matthew 12:9-14) What are some similar instances you have seen with groups today?
2. Read Matthew 16:1. What was their motivation in coming to Jesus (See. 1 Cor. 1:22)? Do you understand who you are in Christ? Do you look for signs, or do you take His precepts as your sign and roadmap for life?
3. Since Jesus could do a sign at any time, why didn’t He? (See. Matthew 16:2-4)
4. Pastor Larry stated in his message that they could not see Jesus even though He was standing right in front of them because they had made their mind up already. How does the over-concern with appearances or trivial matters get in the way of seeking Truth?
5. Read Matthew 16:5-12. Why would the Disciples once again misunderstand Jesus? Place yourself in their mindsets and culture; would you misunderstand too? Why, or why not? How would you feel if Jesus called you, you of little faith? What would you do?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS //

1. Read Matt. 15:32-38. How is this story similar to the feeding of the five thousand in chapter 14? How is it different? Are there any additional insights/lessons you can learn from it?
2. How did the disciples’ resources at that moment compare with the food at their disposal the last time they fed a hungry crowd (see Matthew 14:13-21)? (15:34). Compare and contrast the disciples’ attitudes in both.
3. Read Matt. 15:30-31. What are some of the diseases and ailments that Jesus cured? How did the healings affect all those who watched?
4. Pastor Larry stated that Jesus gave them hope in their life, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. What experience from the past reminds you of God’s work in your life?
5. Why do you think God works through us when he could get things done better and faster by doing miracles? How can we develop love for Christ so we avoid taking his blessings for granted?

Pharisees and religion scholars came to Jesus all the way from Jerusalem, criticizing, “Why do your disciples play fast and loose with the rules?” But Jesus put it right back on them. “Why do you use your rules to play fast and loose with God’s commands?

At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them walking on the water. They were scared to death. “A ghost!” they said, crying out in terror. But Jesus was quick to comfort them. “Courage, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.” Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come ahead.”

Toward evening the disciples approached Jesus. “We’re out in the country and it’s getting late. Dismiss the people so they can go to the villages and get some supper. But Jesus said, “There is no need to dismiss them. You give them supper.” “All we have are five loaves of bread and two fish,” they said. Jesus said, “Bring them here.” Then he had the people sit on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples. The disciples then gave the food to the congregation. They all ate their fill. They gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. About five thousand were fed.
