  • 2008: Meryl Has Such Doubts

While most serious Oscar pundits assumed Meryl was a lock for Best Actress for her role in Mamma Mia, Meryl actually got nominated for her more dramatic work in Doubt, written by the guy who brought us Moonstruck. Doubt also features an unforgettable breakout role for Viola Davis, stellar work from Amy Adams, and one of Philip Seymour Hoffman's most enduring performances. Elsewhere, The Dark Knight was setting box office records as Heath Ledger posthumously won every award in sight, and Slumdog Millionaire became an indie darling. Join us as we discuss the presentation of the acting awards, Hugh Jackman's musical number with Beyoncé, and Kate Winslet's long road to Oscar.

  • 2006: Meryl Wears Prada

Martin Scorsese? For Best Director? Groundbreaking. After losing the Best Director prize five times, Scorsese finally scored with The Departed, which also took home Best Picture, beating out films such as The Queen and Little Miss Sunshine. Not competing in the Best Picture category was Dreamgirls, which, despite earning eight nominations, didn't make the cut. Elsewhere, Meryl was earning raves and dominating the box office with The Devil Wears Prada, Eddie Murphy was having a tough go at the campaigning part of awards season, and Abigail Breslin was happy just to be nominated. Join us as we discuss first-time host Ellen DeGeneres, a surprisingly funny bit with Will Ferrell, and Al Gore's will-he-or-won't-he coyness about a presidential run. (Spoiler alert: He did not run for president.)

  • 2002: Meryl's Meta Movie Loses to Some Razzle Dazzle

Meryl had two major movies in contention at the 75th Academy Awards: The Hours and Adaptation. While she only got a nomination for the latter, her Hours co-star Nicole Kidman ended up winning Best Actress for her role as Virginia Woolf. Elsewhere, controversy brewed over the Best Director race—and not just because of Roman Polanski—and Adrien Brody infamously kissed Halle Berry on his way up to collect his award. Join us as we discuss Catherine Zeta-Jones getting cast at a Christmas party, Sean Astin inspiring moviegoers in the second Lord of the Rings film, and Christopher Walken as an absent dad constantly letting Leonardo DiCaprio down.

  • 1998: Meryl Makes You Want To Call Your Mom

Perhaps the most infamous Oscars in recent memory, the 71st Academy Awards pitted fans of Spielberg war movies against nerds and romantics who like Shakespeare. Shakespeare in Love ended up going home with Best Picture honors, but Saving Private Ryan won Spielberg his second Oscar. Elsewhere, another WWII movie, another Elizabethan movie, and then one more WWII movie scored major nominations. Meryl was nominated for her role as a terminally ill woman in One True Thing and made the cohosts want to call their mothers. Join us as we discuss Roberto Benigni's chair jumping, the worst choice in Oscar history for an honorary award, and the underrated Gods & Monsters.

About Not Her Again

From the publisher's feed

Not Her Again is the movie podcast where we look at those Oscar years where Meryl Streep was nominated for an Oscar… but went home emptyhanded. All 17 of them (and counting? Probably? Who knows?).
