In one of the biggest snubs of all time, Shirley MacLaine missed a nomination for her role in Postcards from the Edge. But Meryl began a string of great 1990s nominations with her role in the same movie, based on the novel by Carrie Fisher. Elsewhere, Whoopi Goldberg was finally getting her due for Ghost, Martin Scorsese was not getting his for Goodfellas, and a malevolent Kathy Bates hammered her way into our hearts with Misery. Join us as we discuss the 63rd Academy Awards.

Michael (@cateblanchetttt) and Katherine (@KathrnTheGrate) discuss the post-Weinstein landscape of Hollywood. Is this a real tipping point for the industry? What can the industry do to combat this entrenched culture of sexism and predatory behavior? (NOTE: This episode was recorded in late October, so if we seem to be leaving out some particularly high-profile allegations, we apologize!)

A Cry in the Dark may be most remembered for its infamous "a dingo took my baby" moment, but the movie features one of Meryl's best performances of the 1980s. While she would go on to lose the Oscar, she had a better night than anyone remotely involved with the production of this disastrous show, which ended in humiliation, litigation, and infamy. Join us as we discuss Rob Lowe's vocal chops, the woman who played Snow White in the worst Oscars opening number of all time, and Chad Lowe's (yup, two Lowe brothers!) participation in the "I Wanna Be An Oscar Winner" number that is more cringeworthy than you remember it being. These were the Oscars that almost broke the Oscars.

A writer's strike cut into the preparation for the 60th Academy Awards, hosted by a smug Chevy Chase. But nothing could stop multi-hyphenate Cher from finally snagging that little gold man and joining the Serious Actress club. Elsewhere, Michael Douglas was busy cultivating a generation of Wall Street wannabes and misogynist creeps, Sean Connery was saying something unintelligible in The Untouchables, and Meryl landed her seventh Oscar nomination for Ironweed. Join us as we discuss Olympia Dukakis' more famous cousin, Glenn Close's Fatal Attraction regrets, and Holly Hunter's crying scenes in Broadcast News.

Two films got 11 nominations at the 58th Academy Awards: One, a sweeping, beautiful epic about love and loss. The other was Out of Africa. In the most unsurprising Oscar twist of all time, a stunning movie depicting the lives of black Americans living in the South lost out to an overly long, boring film about white people in Africa. Join us as we discuss Oprah's unfair talent, the fish-out-of-water antics of Witness, and why you should really watch Cocoon.

We are done with Warren Beatty (for now) and onto his sister, Shirley MacLaine, who wanted an Oscar so badly she even got a nomination for Best Documentary in the 1970s. With the help of James L. Brooks, MacLaine finally got her Oscar for Terms of Endearment. Join us as we discuss the racist casting of Linda Hunt as an Asian man, Cher's Oscar-nominated work opposite Meryl Streep in Silkwood, and the late, great Sam Shepard's wonderful performance in The Right Stuff.

In a battle between Katharine Hepburn and some British runners, you would expect Hepburn to come out on top every time. But the 54th Academy Awards had a different idea, bestowing Best Picture honors on an underdog of a movie featuring a lot of slow-motion running. Join us as we discuss Warren Beatty's hundreds of takes on Reds, Jane Fonda's wildly public daddy issues, and everyone's favorite hit comedy Arthur. (The one with Liza Minnelli, not Russell Brand.)

Two competing Vietnam War movies faced off at the 51st Academy Awards: The Deer Hunter and Coming Home. Which movie deserved the gold? Or did one of the other nominees — including the inexplicably well-received Heaven Can Wait and the underrated An Unmarried Woman — deserve the trophy? Join us as we discuss Meryl's first ever Oscar loss, Angelina Jolie's dad's politics, and famed truth-teller Michael Cimino's take on his Oscar wins.
